VALVE SPECIFICATON
OPERATIONAL PROBLEMS
FUNCTIONS
 Control of flow of fluid (Isolation,
Diversion, Non-return)
 Regulation of flow of fluid - Throttling
 Pressure-reducing
 Pressure-relief
 Safety-relief
 Temperature regulation
 Steam / air trapping
 Mixing of fluids
TYPES OF VALVES
 GATE VALVES
 GLOBE VALVES
 PLUG VALVES
 BALL VALVES
 BUTTERFLY VALVES
 DIAPHRAGM VALVES
 CHECK VALVES
GATE VALVE
 TYPES
 Solid Wedge , Split Wedge
 Flexible wedge , Parallel slide
 Advantages
 Low Pressure drop at full open
 Tight sealing at High Pressure
 Disadvantages
 Vibration & Seat wear at partial
open condition
 Not usable for throttling
 Need more actuating force &
time
 Application
 On-Off application
 High temp & pressure
 Not usable for slurry & high
viscous fluids.
GLOBE VALVE
 TYPES
 Standard type , Angle type
 Y type
 Advantages
 Faster opening & closing
 Best sealing than gate valve
 Throttling & Flow control
possible
 Disc moves with no friction with
seat – hence more seat life
 Disadvantages
 Large pressure drop & flow
turbulance
 Application
 Flow control application & On-off
also
 High temp & pressure
GLOBE VALVE – Angle Valves
PLUG VALVE
 TYPES
 Lubricating type
 Non Lubricating type ( lift, PTFE
coated)
 Advantages
 Low Pressure drop at full open
 Smaller size & wide range MOC
 Suit for slurry applications
 Quick opening & closing
 Disadvantages
 Not suitable for throttling
 Need more actuating force
 Need periodic lubrication
 Application
 All On-Off applications
 Not suitable for high temp &
BALL VALVE
 TYPES
 Reduced port, Full bore
 One piece & multi piece body
 Advantages
 Low Pressure drop at full open in
full bore design
 Tight sealing due to PTFE seat
 Quick operation
 Easy operation due to PTFE seat
 Small size & weight
 Disadvantages
 Not usable for throttling
 Soft seat limits service temp &
pressure
 Application
 Corrosive, cryogenic, high
viscous fluids
BUTTERFLY VALVE
 TYPES
 Flanged type, Wafer type
 Low leakage, tight shut off
 Advantages
 Low Pressure drop at full open
 Simple & compact
 Less weight & cost
 Quick opening / closing
 Can be used for flow regulation
 Disadvantages
 Low pressure service only
 Elastamer seat limits the temp
 Need more actuating force
 Moderate sealing
 Application
 Low pressure application
DIAPHRAGM VALVE
 TYPES
 Weir type , Straight type
 Advantages
 Working parts isolated from fluid
 Suitable for high corrosive
 Simple and low cost
 Easily renewal of diaphragm
 Rubber lined body possible
 Suitable for flow regulation
 Disadvantages
 Diaphragm failure limits the
valve service life
 Not suitable for high temp,pr
 Need more actuating time
 Application
 Suitable for corrosive, viscous,
low pressure & temperature
CHECK VALVE
 TYPES
 Swing check, Lift check
 Advantages
 Reduce water hammer
 Avoid reverse flow
 Disadvantages
 Create some pressure drop
 Application
 Any process where reverse
or back flow should be
avoided.
LIFT CHECK VALVES
STANDARD/SPECIAL DESIGNS
 Raising stem  Fire safe valves
 Non raising stem  Non metalic valves
 Raising wheel
 Knife gate valves
 Pinch valves
 Non raising wheel
 Special MOC valves
 Bolted bonnet  Alloy 20, PTFE
 Screwed bonnet  Alloy steel
 Welded bonnet  Control valve
 Pressure sealed actuators
bonnet  Tow, three & four
way plug valves

OPERATIONAL PROBLEMS
 Gland leak – Gland tightening, Re-packing, Re-
packing on line if back seating available or
Furmaniting on line
 Valve passing – Replace the valve or remove and
recondition the valve
 Bonnet leak – Replace bonnet gasket or Furmaniting
on line
 Stem detachment with gate – Replace the valve or
Gate jacking for opening or closing
 Steam bush damaged – Replace valve or pull the
stem with hoist
 Do not over tight the valve while closing or opening
 Apply grease over the exposed stem frequently
