Five Kings in the

Kandyan Kingdom
Wimaladharmasuriya II
• King Wimaladharmasuriya II was born in Sri Lanka and died in Sri Lanka on June 4,
1707. He ruled the Kandy area from 1687 to 1707 and was a peaceful king who
succeeded his father, Rajasinghe II, on December 7, 1687.
King Wimaladharmsuriya II
also made significant contributions to Buddhism in Sri Lanka. He invited 33 priests
from Burma and established a higher ordination that helped to protect Buddhism.

• During the reign of King Wimaladharmasurya II, the Dutch made several attempts to
capture the Kandyan Kingdom, but they failed. Nevertheless, the Dutch were able to
take control of the Kandyan Kingdom's foreign trade. The King permitted Joseph
Vaz to settle in his kingdom and preach the Christian faith.

King Senarath
• King Senarath Was born in Peradeniya, Sri Lanka he died in 1635 Sri Lanka .

• King Senarath was the ruler of the Kingdom of Kandy from 1604 to 1635. He
succeeded King Wimaladharmasuriya I of Kandy.
• In 1612, Marcelis Boschouwer, a Dutch envoy, made a treaty with Senarath, where the
king granted the Dutch permission to settle in a harbor on the east coast. In return for
this concession, the Dutch promised to provide armed assistance against Portuguese
attacks and were granted significant commercial privileges.

• When a Danish expedition arrived in May 1620, Senarath had already made peace with
the Portuguese. However, this peace didn't last long and in 1630, the Kandyans took
the initiative and invaded Portuguese territories. They laid siege to Colombo and Galle.

• During the reign of King Senarath, Portuguese Captain General Constantino De Sa invaded the Uva area with a large army.

• "The Portuguese suffered a terrible defeat in this battle."


Sri Weera Parakrama Narendrasinghe
• King Sri Weera Parakrama Narendrasinghe was born in 1960 in Sri Lanka he died 13th of May 1739 in Sri Lanka.
"He ruled over the Kandy region from 1707 to 1739."
• He was the final monarch of the Kingdom of Kandy, referred to as the "Prince of Kundasale."

• Prince Kundasale was adopted by his father's Queen Consort to ensure his legal inheritance of the throne. However, when he was
enthroned, a few members of the Royal Court disagreed and tried to give the throne to Prince Pattiya Bandara. As a result, during
his reign, the chiefs and nobles gained more power. Once, a conspiracy was planned by the Second Adigar Yalegoda and his
follower chiefs against the king, and one of the king's old friends, Pedro Dascon alias Pirre de Gascogne, played a key role in
protecting the king. In gratitude, the king appointed him as the Second Adigar in 1709.

• After the death of the king in 1739, the throne was passed on to his wife's brother, Sri Vijaya Rajasinha, as he had no sons or
brothers. Sri Vijaya Rajasinha was of Nayakkar ethnicity, which originated from south India. Although he had children from his
royal consort, such as Prince Unambuwe Bandara, the law from India that belonged to the Queen consort prevented Unumbuwe
Bandara from being appointed as the successor. As a result, the Sinhalese kings' throne came to an end, and it was passed on to
Madurai Nayakkars until the Sri Lankan monarchy came to a close.
King Sri Vijaya Rajasinghe

• King Sri Vijaya Rajasinghe was born in Madurai, India, and died on August 11, 1747.
"He governed the Kandy region between 1739 and 1747."

• "He was the brother of the Nayakkar queen of King Weera Parakrama Narendrasinghe."

• As a "crown prince" (Prince Asthana), Sri Vijaya Rajasinha was given a copy of the Budumula
(The Root of Buddhism), a book that refutes Buddhism, by someone. However, he remained a
devout Buddhist due to the influence of Saranankara Thero. Later, Sri Vijaya became the de
facto ruler because of the serious illness of King Naréndrasinha, but his religious beliefs
remained unchanged.
King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe

• King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe was born in 1780 in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India.
He passed away on January 30th, 1832 at the Vellore Fort in India at the age of
51.
• "Between 1798 and 1815, he governed the Kandy region as its ruler."

• Before his coronation in 1798, Sri Vikrama Rajasinha was known as Prince
Kannasamy Naidu. He belonged to the Madurai Nayak Dynasty and was the nephew
of Sri Rajadhi Rajasinha. At the age of eighteen, he succeeded his uncle as the King
of Kandy in 1798.

• He added the Paththirippuwa to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic.

• On March 2, 1815, the Kingdom of Kandy was surrendered to the British, resulting in Sri Vikrama Rajasinha being deposed
and taken as a royal prisoner to Vellore Fort in southern India. The British colonial administration provided him with a small
allowance to live on along with his two queens. Unfortunately, he passed away due to dropsy on January 30, 1832, at the age
of 52.
