REVITALIZING
YOUTH MINISTRY
Prayer of the Young People

God our Father, we come

together as Church, the Body
of Christ, and through Your
Holy Spirit, we pray for all of
us your young people.
In Your great mercy, You sent
Jesus, Your Son, who grew up
as a young man among the
youth, became an example for
the youth, and consecrated
the youth to You.
Hear our us your young people
every time we proclaim:
We are BELOVED.
We praise You for Your love for
us, which saves us and gives
meaning to our lives.
We are GIFTED.
We rejoice over the many gifts
You give us, enriching us and
our communities.
We are EMPOWERED.
We accept Your Spirit Who
enables us to share Your love
and grace especially to other
youth.
Help the youth of our nation
encounter Christ who always
looks at us with love as He did
with the rich young man, the
disciples on the road to
Emmaus, and those who seek
Your Kingdom.
Form us by Your Holy Spirit
into credible guides for our
young people, like Mary
Magdalene, witness and
missionary of the
Resurrection, to be IN
MISSION: joyfully proclaiming
Christ
who died and rose again.
Nourish us and our young
people through Your Word and
Eucharist, so we may always
choose to be life-giving,
especially to the least, lost
and last.
Together with our young
people, may we follow the
example of our Mother Mary,
whose YES to You, O God,
gave way to the fulfillment of
Your Divine will. We make this
prayer through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
St. Pedro Calungsod, patron of
Filipino youth, pray for us.

ANIMATION
Getting to know activity:
Youth group became an
oasis for us, a place of true
friendship, a
place where we began to
encounter “the more” that
Jesus had for us.
Youth group opened doors
to our gifts and talents, a
deeper understanding of
ourselves and the mission
and ministry God was
calling us to.
Youth groups are:
Youth groups are:
WHERE IT ALL
STARTS ?
Starting a youth group begins with
putting your mind and heart in the right
place. Starting a youth group isn’t a
“right” and it’s not just a task.

We believe it’s a calling; that at some

point, you had a moment of inspiration
or felt a nudge from the Holy Spirit, to
do something - to share what you have
found in Jesus and his Church.
“the Spirit gives
greater
value to
everything you
do”
Pope Francis, Christus Vivit 256
Some things we highly
recommend you pack for this
journey.
• Passion for Jesus
• Openness to growth,
• A sense of commitment;
• Love for young people
• Willingness to be built up in
leadership
• Humility (we are not always
going to get it right and
things don’t always go to plan
- eek!)
Our prayer is that you would
patiently and
wholeheartedly commit to
this mission and that the
fruit of your prayer and work
would be a God-centred, life-
changing youth ministry in
our community and in our
Church.
Young people are not meant to become
discouraged; they are meant to dream
great things, to seek vast horizons, to
aim higher, to take on the world, to
accept challenges and to offer the best
of themselves to building something
better. That is why I constantly urge
young people not to let themselves be
robbed of hope; to each of them I
repeat: “Let no one
despise your youth” (1Tim 4:12)
Pope Francis, Christus Vivit 15
What exactly is Youth Ministry?
Youth Ministry is an intentional way of
engaging young people with the message
of the Gospel.
It’s an invitation to be part of something
greater, to step into the discipleship
journey as part of a
community where young people can grow
in faith, a sense of identity and make
lifelong friends who
share the same core beliefs.
MISSIONARY DISCIPLESHIP
Youth ministry is a not just an
invitation to young people to hear
the Good News of Jesus - it is also
a challenge to follow Him. For this
reason, Youth ministries must
have their foundation rooted in
the Gospel message, empowering
young people to serve and
evangelize in their own way.
“Go therefore and make
disciples of all nations”
Matthew 28:19
Youth ministry is no exception,
there must always be a culture of
welcoming, listening to and
empowering of young people.
What is a Parish Youth Group?
A youth group is not just a social
group, not an entity in and of itself,
it’s more than that! It should be a
place of fun, evangelization,
transformation, a place where young
people can be accepted and be
themselves. It’s part of and deeply
connected to a bigger picture; the
parish; the Church and ultimately,
Jesus Christ.
A youth group will generally meet
at a regular time and place.
Within that time and place, they
might have discussions on
scripture, run a catechesis session,
share a prayer session, run a
youth choir or music ministry for
Mass, or many other activities.
8 main focus areas for youth groups
to have a well-rounded ministry
• Prayer and Worship
• Evangelization
• Catechesis
• Pastoral Care
• Community Life
• Justice and Service
• Leadership Development
• Advocacy
Prayer and Worship

Deepening young people’s relationship with Jesus

through group and personal prayer. This can be
done through, praying with scripture (Lectio Divina,
imaginative contemplation), praying with traditional
prayers (e.g. Rosary, Divine Mercy Chaplet, Stations
of the Cross), praying with the Church (Liturgy of
the Hours, Mass, Reconciliation, Adoration) and
other forms of prayer (journaling, music, prayer
Evangelization

Evangelization is meeting young people ‘where

they are’. It’s connecting with them on a
deeper level and inviting them into a
relationship with Jesus.
Some ideas for your youth group could be: meeting the graduating
grade six students from your primary school and inviting them to join
the youth group or greet other young people after Mass and have a
chat to them.
Catechesis

Catechesis is forming young people in the

Catholic faith through learning about why we
believe what we believe.
This could be done through teachings from a speaker, through
a formation course or through setting up a Question Box and
inviting young people to submit their faith questions
anonymously for leaders to answer.
Pastoral Care

Caring for one another, modeled on how Jesus

lived His life. Journeying with your young
people and giving them opportunities to access
the Sacraments will help form them not only as
Christians but as well rounded people.
Community Life

God is three persons in one being – a community of

love – and, being made in His image and likeness, we
too are called to be in community. If the purpose of
the ministry is lost, the whole mission will fail to exist
and then the group will eventually fold. We always
have to be open and willing to welcome new people
into the great love we find in our community.
Justice and
Service

Most young people have a strong passion to help

people who are less fortunate than themselves and
often social justice is a great entry point for young
people to join a faith community. Your community will
become much richer in companionship and spirit if
you have a culture of giving within your group and
doing service together.
Leadership
Development

Forming and developing leaders in the faith

and practical elements of youth ministry is vital
for a ministry to succeed and have longevity.
The truth is, youth leaders may be the only
connection their young people have to the
faith. So it is very important that leaders have
regular opportunities to learn, reflect and
discuss as a team.
Advocacy

There are three dimensions to Advocacy.

Firstly, it is to advocate for the place and
importance of young people within the Church
and secondly to advocate for young people
who are marginalized within society. And
finally it is to provide opportunities for young
people to be involved in advocacy themselves.
Ministry denotes SERVICE
WITHIN THE CHRISTIAN
CHURCH (Romans 12:1-21)
Youth Ministry is the Church's efforts to
help each & every young person grow
personally & spiritually.
3 Goals of the Youth Ministry
Goal #1: Goal #2: Goal #3:
•To empower •To draw •To foster the
young people young people total
to live as to personal and
disciples of responsible spiritual
Jesus Christ participation growth of
in our world in the life, each young
today mission, and person
work of the
Catholic faith
community
Challenge #1:

Our society and culture neglect

youth and their well-being. It
prioritizes false images of success
and wealth rather than the well-
being of youth.
Challenge #2:
Our youth do not always
receive proper
developmental assets from
their parents, their school
environments, and even
their churches.
Challenge #3:
Leaders and parishes must
incorporate contemporary
approaches to youth ministry,
modernizing ineffective
methods and establishing a
foundation for growth.
