Slip form pavers

Used for laying large areas of concrete int a pre-

set shape – such as on a runway or motorway. The
concrete is distributed evenly across the full
paving width by a spreading auger or spreading
plough and then compacted using vibrators. An
inset mould forms the concrete slab to the
specified thickness and width while the slipform
paver advances. The surface is levelled off
transverse to the paver’s direction of travel by an
oscillating beam, and, finally, a super smoother is
used to finish the concrete slab

Commonly on polyurethane track shoes

Directional Drilling
machines

Horizontal Directional Drilling is a method of

installing underground pipelines, cables and
service conduits using trenchless methods and
involves the use of a directional drilling
machine, and associated attachments, to
accurately drill along the chosen bore path
and back ream ( enlarge the hole )

Left is a Vermeer D24 x 40. Sold on rubber

bonded pads it a perfect candidate for our
Roadliner range
Planers/millers

Planing is the removal of existing worn

asphalt or concrete layers from roads,
runways and other asphalt and concrete
environments using cold planers or cold
milling machines which plane or mill
the road to a required depth. These machines
are now commonly supplied with replaceable
polyurethane pads which bolt on to a steel
shoe which in turn bolts on to the track
chains. These have replaced the polyurethane
“ polypad “ style of shoes wherein the
polyurethane was bonded to the steel shoe
meaning the whole shoe was discarded when
worn
Other smaller drilling
rigs
Dependant upon their duty cycle, drill rigs use steel
pads but can easily be required to adopt rubber
bonded pads, Roadliners or clip-on rubber shoes.
We have supplied 400mm clip on shoes to this
Klemm KR805-1 drill which sits on FL4 140mm
pitch track chains.
Types of rubber/PU
pads
Bolt to chain

Rubber bonded
Rubber bonded to a steel track shoe.

When the the rubber wears it is thrown away.

Commonly used on pavers

Bolt to chain

Roadliners
Rubber bonded over a steel core.

When the rubber wears it is disposed of .

Can be offered, where available and

appropriate as a premium, high quality option
to rubber bonded shoes.
Bolt to pad

EPS
Easy Pad System

Developed by Wirtgen. A polyurethane pad

( disposable ) is bolted to steel TBG backing shoe
which, in turn, is bolted to the chain.

Used on all their popular planers and supersede

Polypads. These can, of course, be used as an
option on other manufacturers machines when bolt
hole spacing and pitch match . We have sold sets
to the Bomag BF 1300/30 ( left ) and I believe
Cat and Volvo are following the Wirtgen model –
which Wirtgen have rolled out to slipform pavers
too ( left lower )

After-market options are available but, with,

integrated bolts
Bolt to chain

Polypads or polygrips
Polyurethane bonded onto a steel shoe.

When the polyurethane wears down wears down

the pad is replaced.

Being phased out by OEM’s . We can offer the

Bolt to pad to chain

Rubber shoe bolted to pad

Allows the operator to switch between rubber and
metal but requires pre-drilled shoes ( unlike clip-
ons )

.
Bolt to chain

How to measure
Track chain pitch, pad width, bolt hole
position and quantity – along
with full machine details.

If an original shoe is available then

knowing the rubber height is helpful too.
EPS

How to measure
It should always be enough on
Wirtgen machines just to collect
full machine details - full as in
every character on the CE plate
on the machine.

For other machines we need width,

bolt holes details and link pitch.

Always double check the number

of track chain links as well –
again, we are learning.
Bolt to pad to chain and
clip-ons

How to measure
Measure track chain pitch, pad width, and
bolt hole position on the rubber pad that is,
in turn mounted to the metal backing plate
and quantity of shoes – along with
full machine details.

Triple grouser shoes will feature 99.9% of

the time.
Common pitch sizes
in this field Will we offer chains /track
groups ?
101mm

125mm

135mm

140mm
Yes – but we are on a learning curve still.
155.5mm
There are different types of bolt hole
160mm
patterns in this field that we may not be used
171.45mm
to e.g. 155.5mm pitch chain has at least 2
175.5mm
common variations.

That’s why checking pitch and bolt hole

pattern is so important as we build data.
Search manufacturer's and distributors web Building the customer
sites ; they are very keen to tell you who they
have sold to
database
Ask existing customers – there is a fraternity
out there

Check for professional bodies e.g. My guess is that you are not aware of 80%. I
Association of Road Planers, trawl their certainly was not. And if they own a
membership lists, offer to do presentations planer . . .

Keep your eyes open ; these machines are on

. the roads you drive
Use Google Building the customer
• Search by name type of planer, drill or database
planer + key words e.g. hire, rental,
contract

• Search by model number

Not the most exciting job – but a critical one
• Search Google images for the products and the basis of success
and note down customer’s names on
machines

. • Search and join relevant Facebook

groups Facebook groups
Planer rollers on Wirtgen Will we offer rollers,
machines are a little different
internally . . . sprockets, idlers, track
adjusters and final
drives ?
Not as a priority as our knowledge is very
sparse and they are not consumed in the same
way as they are on dozers and excavators.

. . . and – because of their low Let’s never say no and collect the data which
friction characteristics are will allow us, eventually, to make informed
commonly used on tough marine decisions as to how to grow.
applications :-
What fits what ?
Building up the best database of essentially Paver, Planer, and Drill Rig track shoes –
and related parts - by machine nomenclature to provide a detailed powerful knowledge
base to drive stocking guidance, populate the PRG and evolve us into a World-Class
supplier
Summary of actions
Agree and order inventory

Populate PRG

Devise ongoing data capture process

Marketing material and sales tools –

consider shows and exhibitions

Train ideally on 1 to 1 basis

Refine supply chain

Caterpillar and Volvo making big inroads and see

this a key market . . .
Thank you !

The road is clear – and, remember – these machines cannot be allowed to break
