INTRODUCTION

The facial muscles are subcutaneous muscles . Since these muscles are
inserted into the skin , these bring out various facial expressions . So, these
are secondarily known as muscles of facial expression .
The muscles of mastication are a group of muscles responsible for the
chewing movement at the temporomandibular joint , they enhance the
process of eating , assist in grinding food, and also function to approximate
the teeth .

MUSCLES OF MASTICATION
PRIMARY MUSCLES The muscles of mastication are the
- Masseter group of muscles that help in the
- Temporalis movement of the mandible as during
chewing and speech .
- Lateral pterygoid
- Medial pterygoid
ACCESSORY MUSCLES
- Diagastric - Sternohyoid
- Stylohyoid - Thyrohyoid
- Mylohyoid - Omohyoid
- Geniohyoid
APPLIED ASPECTS
In prosthodontics , during the recording of the jaw relation , a thorough knowledge about the
various movements of the mandible is essential . The complete denture fabricated for each
patient should function in harmony with the functional mandibular movements.
The muscles of mastication are the most important determinants of the mandibular
movements . In a normal patient , the muscles function in a coordinated smooth manner . But
when there is hypertrophy or dysfunction of one group of muscles , the movement of the
mandible is uncoordinated and asymmetrical. Similarly, the tone of the muscles also
determine the freedom of movement. Muscular dysfunction should be evaluated before
performing jaw relations .
Each muscle has a specific action on the mandible . The movement
of the mandible in any direction is predominantly controlled by one
particular muscle and is coordinated by the remaining . For
example , the lateral pterygoid controls protrusion, the medial
pterygoid and the masseter control the lateral movements and the
temporalis controls retraction and closure of the mandible .
