Electromagnetic Spectrum

WEEK 8
LI & SC
LEARNING INTENTION SUCCESS CRITERIA

We will explore beyond the I can:

- give examples of UV, infrared,
visible spectrum of light: microwaves, radio waves, and X-rays
UV, infrared, microwaves, - identify the uses and dangers of
radio waves, and X-rays. different types of radiation
- explain applications of radiation in
technology and everyday life
Warm-Up Activity
What am I? Electromagnetic spectrum addition
Grab 1 white board for each table group.
Choose team name.
1 student to be teachers assistant. (Gets House Points)
Write answers on white board. First too answer gets a
point.
Radio
Waves
Radio waves
are electromagnetic
waves with the longest
wavelengths. They are
used to transmit data
from radios, satellites,
and radar.
Microwaves
Microwave radiation is
commonly referred to
as microwaves. They
fall between infrared
radiation and radio
waves in the
electromagnetic
spectrum.
Infrared
A type of radiant energy
that's invisible to human
eyes but that we can feel
as heat. All objects in the
universe emit some level
of Infrared radiation, but
two of the most obvious
sources are the sun and
fire.
Visible Light
Visible light is the
only part of the
electromagnetic
spectrum we can
see.
ROYGBIV.
Ultraviolet
(UV)
• UV is an invisible type of light
that come from the sun.
UV has three different types.
• UVA= longest wavelength and
what we come into contact most
with
• UVB= middle wavelength and
most get absorbed by the ozone
layer and some we encounter,
• UVC= shortest wavelength and
ALL rays are absorbed by ozone
layer.
X-Ray
X-rays are a form of
electromagnetic
radiation, similar to
visible light. Unlike light,
however, x-rays have
higher energy and can
pass through most
objects, including the
body.
Gamma
Rays
Gamma rays have the
smallest wavelengths and the
most energy of any wave in
the electromagnetic spectrum.
They are produced by the
hottest and most energetic
objects in the universe, such
as neutron stars and pulsars,
supernova explosions, and
regions around black holes.
