ENTERIC NERVOUS

SYSTEM
 GIT has its own nervous system
called Enteric nervous system
 Extends from esophagus to anus
 The enteric nervous system consists
of two plexuses
 1-myenteric or auerbachs plexus
 2-meissners plexus
MYENTERIC PLEXUS MEISSNERS PLEXUS

It is present b/w longitudinal and It is present in sub mucosa

circular layer of smooth muscles in
muscularis
Control git movements Control blood flow and secretion
Can be excitatory or inhibitory Inhibitory
EXTRINSIC SUPPLY
 Enteric nervous system can function
without involvement of any extrinsic
nerves but there are some extrinsic
nerves which enhances its function
 The extrinsic supply consists of both
sympathetic and parasympathetic
innervation
PARASYMPATHETIC
SUPPLY
 The extrinsic parasympathetic supply is
from
 X cranial nerve ( vagus nerve) which
innervates GIT from esophagus to large
intestine except its distal part
 S2,S3,S4 spinal nerves which form
pelvic nerves which innervates distal
part of large intestine to anus
 These are preganglionic fibres
SYMPATHETIC SUPPLY
 These are post ganglionic
 The fibers originate from t5-l2 spinal
nerves and passes through outlying
ganglion
 Fibers arising from these ganglion are
post sympathetic ganglion which then
innervates the GIT.
SENSORY SUPPLY
 Some sensory nerve endings originate
in epithelium of git and send some fibers
to both plexus prevertebral ganglia to
spinal cord and vagus nerve all the way
to brain stem
