ABSTRACT :

Uniform distribution is a fundamental concept in statistics. It is used to describe a scenario where

every possible outcome is equally likely.
In this topic, we will delve into the details of uniform distribution, exploring its probability density
function, properties by providing its measures and examples with applications in daily life.

DISTRIBUTION AND
APPLICATIONS
UNIFORM DISTRIBUTION

• Uniform Distribution is also known as Rectangular Distribution.

• A random variable X is said to have a continuous uniform distribution if its probability

density function is defined by

f(x) = { 0
, a<X<b

, otherwise
PROBABILITY DENSITY FUNCTION

◎ Uniform Probability Distribution Function :-

• Uniform probability distribution function is given by

0 , -∞ < x ≤ a

F(x) = P(X ≤ x) = , a≤x≤b

1 , b≤a<∞

PROPERTIES DENSITY DISTRIBUTION
OF UNIFORM FUNCTION

◎ PROPERTIES OF THE UNIFORM DISTRIBUION :-

•  Continuous.

•  Random variable can take on any value between a minimum value of a to a maximum
values of b.

•  All equal sized intervals of X are equally likely.

•  Notation :-

Uniform distribution can also be denoted by

U (x : a, b) or U(a, b)
MEASURES OF UNIFORM DISTRIBUTION

1) Mean :-

Let X is a uniform variable with

then by definition,

the mean : E(X) or µ =

⸫E(X) =
2) Variance :-

Let X is a uniform varable with

then since by definition,

the variance : V(x) = E(X2) - [E(X)]2

E(X2) =

⸫V(X) =
3) Standard Deviation :-

The Standard Deviation of uniform distribution is positive square root of it’s variance.

Standard Deviation :

=
◎ EXAMPLE :-

Bus is uniformly late between 2 and 10 minutes. How long can you expect to wait? With what SD?
If it’s >7 mins late, you’ll be late for work. What’s the probablity of you being late?

SOLUTION :-

Given that the bus is uniformly late between 2 and 10 minutes, the expected wait time can be
calculated using the mean of the range. ( a = 10 and b = 2 )

Mean of uniform distribution is E(X) or µ = = = = 6 mins.

SD () = = = 2.31 mins.

P (7 ≤ X ≤ 10) = = 0.375 mins.
