MARIO BOTTA
MARIO BOTTA
Mario Botta was born on April 1, 1943 in
Mendrisio, Switzerland.
He received his early education at Genestrerio and later
attended the Mendrisio for his secondary education.

At the age of 15, he decided to quit school and work as a

draftsman in the architectural studio of Carloni and
Camenish, in Lugano, Switzerland.

Working for these notable architects enhanced and

developed Botta’s artistic abilities, and he perfected his
natural talent for drawing.
In 1965, Botta enrolled himself at the Istituto
Universitario di Architecttura in Venice, and graduated
with a degree in architecture.
Mario Botta is celebrated contemporary Swiss architect,
best known from manipulating the cultural and natural
elements of a landscape to create a breathtakingly
beautiful sight.

Most of his work has been located around the region of

Lugano, in Switzerland, yet largely influenced by Italian
culture.
PHILOSOPHY
Botta sticks to a philosophy of historical determinism in
which architecture acts as a mirror of its times.
He is interested in history and in the study of man's habitat
through time.
Botta's works characteristically show respect for
topographical conditions and regional sensibilities and his
designs generally emphasize craftsmanship and geometric
order.

Because he attempts to reconcile traditional

architectural symbolism with the aesthetic rules of the
Modern Movement, Botta is often identified with the
Italian neo-rationalist group, the Tendenaz.
Some of his philosophical considerations are:
-Importance of site
-City and the historical stratification
-Light
-Gravity
-Geometry, symmetry, order
-Natural materials
CHURCH SANTO VOLTO
Location: Turin, Itay
Site area: 10,000m2
Construction: 2004 - 2006

The church has a heptagonal plan and is

composed of seven towers added with
the lower bodies of chapels that, through
their truncated top, also act as skylights.
Inside the pyramidal roof embraces the
wide hall and through the alteration of
solids and voids generates a suggestive
play of light and shadow in the central
space.
The face of jesus has been reproduced
on the apsidal wall through the skillful
laying of red Verona tone bricks.

The church connects to the urban surrounding by the lower building running along two sides with offices of
the metropolitan curia, apartments, a weekday chapel, a presbytery and various structures for education and
recreation as well as an underground conference hall.

MUSEUM OF MODERN ART
San Francisco, USA
Location: San Francisco, USA
Site area: 5575 m2
Construction: 1992 - 1995

The museum is in the Yerba Buena district

with the city skyscrapers in the background.
In contrast with the vertical tension of
this latter, the MOMA seems anchored
to the ground.
It's orthogonal volume, formed by a steel
structure covered with brick clad prefabricated
elements, expands horizontally.
The impressive skylight in the shape of a
truncated cylinder becomes an "eye" towards
the city and illuminates the lobby beneath.

The museum develops on five floors above ground and a basement.

On the ground floor there is a big internal square with a library, a cafeteria
and an auditorium while the exhibition spaces are on the four upper
floors.

RESIDENTIAL BUILDING " LA VISTA"
Haarlemmermer, Netherlands
Location: Haarlemmermer, Netherlands
Area: 9300 m2
Construction: 2001 - 2008

The two residential brick- cladtowers rise

next to a canal surrounded by a big plain.
They are in the shape of half cylinders and ar
laid out in such a way to form a square facing the
water sheet.
The exterior perimeter is marked by the
rhythmical succession of windows.
The resultant alteration of solids and voids
makes it possible to perceive the changeable
effects of lights on the surfaces.

The two towers emerge like simple geometrical volumes from

the plain but they also contrast with finality with the gentleness
of the surrounding vegetation.
The simple and primary forms of the near old thermal power
station dialogues with the imposing
presence of the new settlements.
