SCHOLAR LED
CONFERENCES:
MIDDLE SCHOOL
2022

Scholar-Led Conferences (SLC) are a way to
empower scholars as experts in their own
learning and highlight their voices and insights to
drive a rich discussion on goal setting
• Scholars assume greater responsibility and
accountability of their academic progress and
habits of learning
PURPOSE • Parents, teachers (Advisors) and scholars engage
in open dialogue through the process
• Allows an opportunity for scholars to self-reflect,
self-evaluate and develop a plan towards success
• To emphasize our scholar-centered philosophy
ROLE OF THE SCHOLAR

• The scholar is the center of the Scholar-Led Conferences. Teachers and Advisor only
guide the scholars. Scholars are responsible for leading the conversation with parents
during their conference time.
• Through the conference process scholars collect and prepare artifacts. Each scholar
maintains a e-portfolio to showcase progress and achievement in all content areas and
performance-based courses. Scholars identify challenges and areas for growth.
• Scholars complete a Scholar Reflection/Academic Tool for each content area, review the
Scholar Conference Script, and Scholar Checklist.
• The Scholar Script allows scholars to reflect on their strengths, weaknesses, pieces of
work, and future goals.
The parent is the second most essential
attendee to the conference with the
scholar being the first.

Parents will be briefed about the

ROLE OF THE format and expectations of the SLC
PARENT

to the scholar on academic and
behavioral expectations, overall
performance and goals.
The Advisor guides the scholar through the conference and helps
the scholars prepare and compile artifacts.

Each teacher supports scholars with creating a portfolio of work.

T
SUBJECT identifying assignments to share during the conference and for
providing class time for this purpose.
TEACHER AND
ADVISOR
E-Portfolios count as a project grade in the English Language
Arts classes and ELA teachers will review portfolios to provide
a grade based on an established rubric and/or scoring system.
All portfolios involve scholars in their own education so
that they have ownership of the personal collection of
work, reflect on what makes some work better, and use this
information to make improvements in future work.

Scholar portfolios act as a tool to facilitate the integration

of learning as scholars connect learning across subject
areas and time.

SCHOLAR The portfolio provide structure for scholars to develop self-

assessment abilities in which they judge the quality of their
PORTFOLIO work using the same criteria

Teachers can also review and come to understand what

scholars know and are able to do and what they still need
to learn

Presentation of learning must be done through the use of an

e-portfolio, or PowerPoint or alternative digital tool and
incorporate grades from Mid-Semester 2 Progress Report.
