Clarity of Problem Definition Based on Need

❖Worldwide, the prevalence of diabetic retinopathy (DR) is increasing at an

?
alarming rate.
❖Accurate diagnosing of Diabetic Retinopathy requires skilled and experienced
ophthalmologist.
❖Lack of proper diagnosis and treatment facilities mainly at primary and secondary
care level, many of the undiagnosed and uncontrolled diabetic patients become
blind.
❖So this project aims at creating a Diabetic Retinopathy Diagnosis System which
will diagnose the problem accurately and quickly.
❖It will help inexperienced doctors to accurately diagnose the problem and speed up
the overall process.

 In the article “The economic burden of diabetic

retinopathy care at a tertiary eye care center in
South India” published on Feb17 2021 , it is
mentioned that a study was conducted to
analyse the cost and factors affecting DR care.

The study evaluated 1000 consecutive patients (2000 eyes) with DR in at least
one eye. The study included 250 patients in the mild and moderate NPDR group,
239 patients in severe NPDR, and 261 patients in the PDR group .

 The following are the results/findings which are relevant to our project:-
1. The indirect cost incurred for DR diagnosis or treatment increases as
the distance of the hospital from patient’s home increases.
2. The total cost of treatment provided to 1000 people with DM was INR
23,767,838 (USD 321,187) over 6 months period. The median cost
per patient was INR 8,214 .
3. The cost analysis was done for sight-threatening DR (STDR) (29,156
± 42,772) and non-STDR (13,172 ± 25,752)

4. The average medical cost per eye was the

Average Cost least when the patients were treated early
Eye Condition with good vision, and highest when the
patients were blind due to advanced
disease .

5. There was a huge difference in the

average medical cost per eye for blind
patients (INR 26,270/355 USD)
compared to those treated with good
vision (INR 8,510/115 USD).
6. About 43% of people did not return
for review examination, and hence
we do not know the final cost of care.

Societal Impact SHREE L. R. TIWARI

 As our project is going to a web application , so patients need not travel a very long
distance , at least for proper diagnosis
 A lot of money can be saved as DR can be detected at an early stage.
 The treatments will be less invasive as DR will be detected at a early stage
 People will not have to worry about money for diagnosis purpose and hence the rate of
early detection will increase.
 Time required for detection will decrease.
 Patients need not visits big hospitals as this provision of diagnosis can be made available
at local small hospitals also.
