CLIMATE CHANGE
Climate Change & Its Causes

It is the range of global phenomena caused by

burning fossil fuels that add heat-trapping gases
to the Earth’s atmosphere.

Global warming, used interchangeably with

climate change, specifically refers to Earth’s
upward trends of temperature since 20th century.
CLIMATE CHANGE
Overview of the Issue
 Warming effect is caused by greenhouse gases in the
atmosphere.
 Some common greenhouse gases that contribute to global
warming include naturally occurring gases such as:
 Carbon Dioxide

 Methane & Nitrous Oxides

 Man-made gases such as:

 chlorofluorocarbons

 hydrofluorocarbons

 perfluorocarbons

 sulfur hexafluoride.
CLIMATE CHANGE
Climate Change & Energy Crisis
The future of global economy is more likely to
consume ever more energy, especially with the
rising energy demand of developing Asian
countries.

This is coupled with the tremendous risk of climate

change associated with the use of fossil fuels and
other energy sources which makes supplying the
required safe level of energy increasingly difficult.
CLIMATE CHANGE
DANGEROUS PLACES ON EARTH
Why is this happening?
Sahel – a region bordering the Sahara Desert in Africa is
one of the most dangerous places on earth. Limited
water was caused by human exploitation resulting to
massive desertification and greatly increased the risk of
drought and famine.
Danakil Desert – located in Northeast Ethiopia. It is
known as one of the most hostile and dangerous places
in the world. Hostility is based on the presence of
volcanoes and geysers that spit toxic gases and extreme
heat, with daytime temperatures surpassing 500C.
CLIMATE CHANGE
DANGEROUS PLACES ON EARTH
Why is this happening?
Lake Nyos – in Northwestern Cameroon is an
area of deadly volcanic activity where carbon
dioxide leaks from beneath the ground.

Oymyakon – located deep in the heart of

Siberia, has the lowest recorded temperature for
any permanently inhabited location. One of the
coldest places in the world.
CLIMATE CHANGE
DANGEROUS PLACES ON EARTH
Why is this happening?
Dallol -town found in Northern Ethiopia is one
of the most remote, lowest and hottest places on
Earth is a ghost town.
Monrovia – the capital of the West African
country of Liberia is one of Africa’s worst slums.
The slum is plague with cholera epidemics, drug
use, crime, teenage prostitution, and a lack of
sanitary facilities.
CLIMATE CHANGE
DANGEROUS PLACES ON EARTH
Why is this happening?
Haiti – the third largest country in the
Caribbean, is one of the poorest countries in the
region and most hurricane-prone countries in
the world.

Mailu Suu – one of the most radioactive places

in the world. The place is uranium mining town.
CLIMATE CHANGE
Various Impacts
From 1947 to 2014, ten (10) deadliest had
visited the Philippines and left
unforgettable and unforgivable memories.
The deadliest storm on record in the
Philippines and possibly the world is
typhoon Haiyan, known locally as
Typhoon Yolanda,
CLIMATE CHANGE
Various Impacts
Typhoon Haiyan
Responsible for more than 6,300 lost lives,
over four million displaced citizens and PhP
104 billion in damages in 2013 due to its 315
kph wind speed. Climate change worsens the
economic situation and food security among
others of the Philippine people. Climate
change has affected even the agricultural
sector.
Environmental Awareness
In school and different agencies of the
government integrate environmental
education in its curricula at all levels,
whether public or private, including a
barangay daycare, preschool, non-formal,
technical vocational, professional level,
indigenous learning and out-of-school
youth courses or programs
Environmental Awareness
Most Toxic Places in the world
Science and Technology may have made
human lives easier and more exciting but
evidence of waste points to him as the culprit.
He made all kinds of pollutants, which up to
this day, continues to paint an ugly picture of
what he had done and perhaps, will continue
to do so because of his undisciplined manner
of treating his environment.
Environmental Awareness
Top Ten Toxic Places in the world
 Arbogbloshie, Ghana
 Chernobyl, Ukraine
 Citarum River, Indonesia
 Dzershinsk, Russia
 Hazaribagh, Bangladesh
 Kabwe, Zambia
 Kalimantan, Indonesia
 Matanza Riachuelo, Argentina
 Niger River Delta, Nigeria
 Norilsk, Russia
