CONDITIONAL 0-1

Vaneza Delgadillo S.
Zero conditional affirmative

What is the zero conditional?

The zero conditional is a grammatical structure that is used to talk about

general truths or about situations that are real and possible. It is used to talk
about scientific laws, general truths, and to give instructions.
Zero conditional affirmative

Structure:

If + Subject + present simple, + Subject + present simple

Examples

• If it rains, plants grow.

• If you heat ice, it melts.
Negative zero conditional

In the case of negative sentences in zero conditional, it

is necessary to use the auxiliary do/does. Structure:

If + Subject + do not/ does not + verb in

infinitive, + Subject + do not/ does not + verb in
infinitive
Examples:

● If she doesn't work, she doesn't feel good.

● If you don’t study, you don’t learn.
Zero conditional interrogative

To form the interrogative conditional zero, you must use an

interrogative particle and an auxiliary. This is the structure:

If + Subject + verb in infinitive / simple present, + Wh- +

Auxiliary + Subject + simple present + ?
Examples :

• If you study all night, when do you sleep?

• if you mix blue and green What color do you get ?

First Conditional
We will use the first conditional to talk about particular situations that can
happen safely. We also use it when we talk about future plans, threats,
warning and promises or to convince someone of something.
To do this, we will use Present Simple and Future Simple.
First conditional in affirmative form

The first English conditional in the affirmative must include a clause in

the present simple and another clause in the future simple. Structure:

If + Subject + simple present, Subject + Will + infinitive verb

Examples

• If my family buys the land, we will build a house.

• If it is not that cold tonight, I will go for a walk.

First English conditional in negative form

The first conditional can also be used in the negative. In this case, it is
necessary to include the negative formula doesn't or don't in the clause that
includes the 'if'. Structure:

If + Subject + do/does not + present simple, Subject + will + not +

infinitive verb
Examples:

• If you don't drive carefully, you will have an

accident.
• If you don't do your homework, you will not come to
the cinema.
First conditional in interrogative form

The first conditional in interrogative form is very simple. Simply what you
should do is reverse the order of the clauses. That is, the first will be the future
clause and the second will be the condition.
Formula

Will + Subject + infinitive verb + If + Subject +

present simple verb + ?
Exemples:

• Will you buy me an ice cream if I clean my

room?

• Will I pick you up if it is too late?
