Heat Treatment Processes

Presented By-
Arun Kumar
Assistant Professor
Med Department
Session outcomes
• concept and purpose of heat treatment.

• Recognize and differentiate between

annealing,normalizing,hardening,
tempering.
Pre-requisite
 Should have basic understanding of
Critical Temperature of different types
of Steels.
Introduction

Definition: Heat treatment is a group of

industrial and metal working processes
used to alter the physical and sometimes
chemical properties of a material.e.g.low
density and high strength (carbon fiber
composite for auto, aerospace, and
sports)
Purpose: To enhance properties like
strength, hardness, ductility, and
toughness.
Types Of Heat Treatment Process

Annealing

NORNALIZING HARDENING

TEMPERING
Annealing

•Process: Heating the material to

upper critical temperature and then
cooling slowly in furnance.
•Purpose: Reduce hardness, improve
ductility, relieve internal stresses.

Normalizing
•Process: Heating to a temperature
above the critical range and cooling in
air.
•Purpose: Refine grain structure,
improve machinability, and enhance
mechanical properties

Case Hardening

Process: Heating to a specific

temperature and then quenching rapidly.
Purpose: Increase hardness and strength.

Tempering
•Process: Reheating hardened
material to a lower temperature and
then cooling.
•Purpose: Reduce brittleness, retain
hardness and strength.

Conclusion
•Heat treatment processes, such as
annealing, Normalizing, tempering,
and case hardening, are employed to
enhance material properties like
hardness, strength, ductility, and
toughness.
