Radio mesh network for disaster management
• After a disaster like tornado, earthquake, tsunami is struck the cell phone towers are
also destroyed, this cuts off the area from communication. In a time where
communication is essential to recover and rescue people the entire affected area is
devoid of the primary need.

• Establishing connection becomes necessary which is what our project does. The project
aims to establish communication using nodes that use radio waves to establish
connection from one place to the other. The nodes can be deployed quickly and the
advantages it provides are enormous.

• The nodes allow the community members to community members to connect through a
community chat, it allows long range walkie talkie connections to allow rescue teams to
connect with other rescue teams and the control center, And it also allow to connect the
radio subnetwork to connect to mobile network to make normal phone calls.
Mesh Network Setup after a disaster

• Extended Connectivity through Nodes • Solar powered Radio Nodes Setup (example)
Objective of the project

Advantages: Implementation:
• Long range • Radio Modules such as NRF24 or
• Cheap LoRa modules can be used to send
• Parts easily available chat data from one node to other

• People can have One Call at a time by the AM transmission and the
reaching on one of the nodes and attachment on the walkie talkie of a

• This helps people in the disaster struck
area to communicate with someone far

Social Impact
• Ensures an effective and reliable mechanism of communication during cases of
emergency like calamities and disasters.

• Provides effective management of resources so that the one in need get help
faster, hence prioritization of resource distribution effectively.

• Reduces the probabilities of miscommunication and mishaps due to confusion.

• Will certainly reduce the number of causalities and make a better model for
warning and caution before calamities.

• Will help the government to get clear idea of the situation of the people on
ground so that resource relocation be made easier.

Expected Outcome of the project
• The project allows the people in the disaster struck area to communicate and
ask for help from their own people in the community and the authorities through
community chat.

• It allows the rescue teams to communicate with each other for efficient sharing
of resources and fast recovery.

• It allows for the setup of a control center for the authorities to guide and direct
the rescue teams.

• The camera ability allows the rescue teams to ask for guidance, through
pictures of the scene, from the control center.

• Establishment of one call line allows the people in the affected region to have a
call using the cell phone communication.
State of Art
The Idea of using radio communication at the time of disaster has long been
popular for the amateur radio enthusiasts. The origins of the mesh network arises
form there only as what's better than one is using multiple connected nodes.
We are taking inspiration from the previous works by various individuals in the
area and bring the technology to be mainstream in our country. From the hilly
areas of Uttarakhand to challenging areas of North-East where Earthquakes,
Floods are periodic, having this technology in hand is going to be immensely
helpful.

**Various new thing we are bringing into the idea, which had never been
implemented anywhere else.
• Providing the individuals with cheap hand-held communication
devices
• The Idea of a central control system
• Connecting the Rescue teams far apart
• Having camera capabilities on board
• Connecting the cell phone network to radio network

Abstract
At the time of disaster like earthquake, tornado, tsunami, floods etc. The cell towers
are destroyed and added with the power grid failure due to destruction of power
lines, The entire cell phone network is gone in a time where communication is most
required. A time where people have to come in community to help each other and
heal, Communication between the people becomes massively difficult.

The Project solves the problem by establishing a local radio network that is quick to
install and provides tremendous features. The project includes a community chat
through which people can seek help, It allows rescue teams to connect to each
other whatsoever distance between them be, It allows to have a central control unit,
The camera capabilities allow the teams to take pictures and send it to central
control for guidance or quick information exchange, Finally the GSM connection
allows a cell phone call from any node.

These features will tremendously aid the rescue operation and healing of the
people from the consequences of the disaster.
