Clean and purify the extracted sand
The first step in the process of converting sand to glass is to obtain high-quality silica sand. This involves identifying
and accessing natural deposits of silica-rich sand, extracting the sand from the earth, and then processing it to remove
impurities and contaminants. The resulting pure silica sand is the foundation for the glass-making process.
ADD CHEMICALS •Pure Silica (SiO(_2)): Used for its UV-blocking
properties, requires high heat to melt.
•Sodium Carbonate (Na(_2)CO(_3)): Lowers silica’s
melting point but makes glass water-soluble.
•Lime (CaO): Prevents water solubility and is a major
component of modern glass.
•Magnesium Oxide (MgO): Enhances glass’s chemical
structure.
•Aluminum Oxide (Al(_2)O(_3)): Strengthens glass and
prevents solubility.
•Lead Oxide: Increases glass’s refractive index for
optical uses.
•Barium: Boosts reflectivity and heaviness of glass.
•Lanthanum Oxide: Enhances glass’s clarity and
brightness for lenses.
•Sodium Sulfate: Prevents air bubbles in glass
production.
•Sodium Chloride: Helps to stabilize the glass melt.
•Antimony Oxide: Acts as a fining agent to remove
bubbles.
•Iron: Absorbs infrared energy, used in heat-
absorbing glass.
•Cerium (IV) Oxide: Blocks UV radiation in glass.
•Boron Oxide: Key in Pyrex glass, resists thermal
shock.
