What does gold, silver and carbon have in
common?

After Lesson
Chemical symbols
• Elements in the periodic table are assigned names.
Every element has its own chemical symbol as well.
This is one or two letter code.

Rule:
• When you write chemical symbols, make sure the
first letter is a CAPITAL letter. The second letter is
lower case.
For most elements the chemical symbol is the first
letter of their name or the first and second/ third letter
of its name.
Review 3
Use periodic table to write names and chemical
symbols of:
1. 5 elements with single letter chemical symbol.
2. 5 elements with two letter chemical symbol.

Challenge: Write names and chemical symbols of 2

elements each that are:
1. Solids 2. Liquids 3. Gases
at room temperature
Super challenge: Look at the chemical symbols of
Gold, Silver and Iron. Why don’t their symbols match
their names?

Atoms
• All elements are made of millions of
atoms. They are the smallest part of an
element. You need special type of
microscope to look at atoms.

• Every element is made of one type of

atom. Ex: Gold is made of gold atoms

• The atoms of one element are different to

the atoms of all other elements.
Review 1

Complete Question 1 in your

worksheet
How many atoms are there?
There are 92 naturally occurring elements, so there
are 92 types of atoms.
For example:
All silicon atoms are the same, but they are different
to gold atoms.
Element Mass of 1cm3 of the element (g)
gold 19.3
Silicon 2.33

THINK, PAIR AND SHARE…. How are they different?

Use the above data to explain.
Review 2

Complete Questions 2 and 3 in your

worksheet
One atom vs many atoms
One atom on its own does not have the property
of the element. The property of an element is
because of many atoms joined together.
For ex: Gold is yellow, shiny solid at room
temperature.
A single gold atom is not yellow. It is not shiny and
does not exist in any states of matter.

This 1000 g gold bar is made of

3,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 gold atoms

• Complete question 4 and extension task

Challenge:
An Olympic gold medal is made up of three elements- copper,
zinc and tin:

1.State the number of types of atoms in the medal. Explain your

answer.
2. Use colouring pencil to draw a particle diagram of this medal
