ONE WAY SLAB

One-Way Slab is supported on two sides only for which the ratio of the long
span to short span is greater than 2.0. The slab will bend or deflected in a
direction perpendicular to the supported lengths.
Minimum thickness of one–way slab as per NSCP 2015 should be equal
to:

(1) for simply supported spans.

(2) for one end continuous spans.
(3) for both end continuous spans.
(4) for cantilever spans.

Note: For fy not equal to 415 MPa, the values shall be multiplied by 0.4+.
Sample Problem:
Design a one-way slab to carry a service load of 4 kPa. The slab has a length of
4 m with both ends continuous. Assume f’c = 21 MPa and fy = 415 MPa for main
bars and fy = 276 MPa for temperature bars.

Solution:
Consider 1m strip, b= 1000 mm
Uniform live load = 4 kPa x 1m = 4 kN/m
hmin= = 142.857 mm say 150 mm
Wt. of slab = 23.544(0.15)(1) = 3.532 kPa
Wu = 1.2(3.532)+1.6(4) = 10.638 kN/m

Effective Depth:
d = 150-20-12/2 = 124 mm
At Midspan:
Mu = Kn-m min = 1.4/ fy
Rn = = 0.769 MPa min = 1.4/ 415
= (1) = 0.00337
min
= (1)
= 0.00189 min > 0.00337
Spacing of 12 mm main bottom bar :

As = bd
As = 0.00337(1000)(124) = 417.88 mm2
Abar = 113.097 mm2
S = = 270.64 mm say 270 mm

Max spacing required by code:

3h = 3 (150) = 450 mm
450 mm

Therefore, Use 12 mm bottom bars @ 270 mm o.c. at midspan

At Support:

Mu = kN m max =
Rn = = 1.229 max =
Mpa

Spacing of 12 mm main top bar:

As = bd
As = 0.00307(1000)(124)
As = 380.68 mm2
Abar =
Abar 113.097 mm2

S= = 297.09 mm say 290 mm

Max spacing required by code:

3h = 3 (150) = 450 mm
450 mm

Therefore, use 12mm Ø top bars @ 290mm o.c. at

support
Temperature bars:
At = 0.002bh
At = 0.002(1000)(150)
At = 300 mm^2

Abar = 78.540 mm^2

S= = 261.8 mm say 260 mm

Maximum spacing required by the code:

5h = 5(150) = 750 mm
450 mm

Therefore, use 10 mm temperature bars @ 260 mm o.c.
