Different factors can affect health.

Dimensions of health include the following:

• Physical health

• Social health

• Mental health

• Emotional health

Physical health

• Any physical aspect of health

• Physical ill-health can include diseases


and disorders

• Fractures or other physical injuries

Social health

• The ability to build and keep


relationships

• Good communication skills

Mental health

• Refers to the cognitive aspect of health

• The ability to learn, think and remember

• It is about the functioning of the brain

Emotional health

• Refers to feelings and emotions

• A person can identify and manage their


emotions

• Can be confused with mental health


How do the dimensions affect each other?

All of the dimensions are important; individually and all together


• The state of health in one dimension of health will have an impact on the
other dimensions

• Illness can affect one dimension, or all of them

• Illness of one dimension can have an impact on the other dimensions


Health is a changing state

It is difficult to say if a person is ‘healthy’ or ’unhealthy’ at any one time


• They might be physically healthy, but not socially

• Health is constantly changing

• There are many challenges within the environment that can affect your state of health

• These are known as barriers to health

• Barriers to health are things that affect health that you as an individual cannot control
Barriers to Health

Some barriers to health are:


• Weather

• Local healthcare facilities

• Other people’s behaviour

• The food available
