Dividing Numbers by

Tens, Hundreds and

Thousands
Examples:
1. 4 800 ÷ 600 = n ( If you cancel 2 zeros in your divisor, cancel also
2 zeros from your dividend, the remaining numbers becomes 48 ÷ 6 = n )

48 ÷ 6 = 8

2. 63 000 ÷ 90 = n

6 300 ÷ 9 = 700 (In this example, we

cancel only 1 zero from our divisor and 1 zero from our
dividend.)
To divide numbers by 10, 100 or
1 000, follow these steps:

1. Cancel out as many zeros in the

dividend as there are in the divisor.
2. Divide the remaining digits of the
dividend and the divisor the way
you divide whole numbers.
Activity:

Divide the following numbers. Write the correct

answer on the blank.

1. 450 ÷ 50 = _____
2. 540 ÷ 90 = _____
3. 8 800 ÷ 800 = ______
4. 3 200 ÷ 400 = ______
5. 4 500 ÷ 900 = ______
6. 50 000 ÷ 500 = _____
Generalization:

1. How did you find the

quotients of the multiple of 10,
100 and 1000?
Evaluation: Divide. Write the correct
answer in the blank.

1. 450 ÷ 50 = _____
2. 3 200 ÷ 40 = _____
3. 5 600 ÷ 700 = _____
4. Eden has saved PhP6 000 from daily
allowance. She asked her mother if she
could have the amount in 500-peso bills.
How many 500-peso bills will her mother
give her?

PRACTICE #1-10
Estimating Quotients
80 873 ÷ 31 = n
81 000 ÷ 30 = 2 700

We round off first the divisor to the

highest place value, so it becomes 30
and the divisor becomes 81 000, because
we are going to round off the dividend the
nearest multiple of the divisor.
Words to be used in
estimation.
- around
- about
- estimate
- more or less
Examples: Round off first the divisor
before rounding off the dividend to the
nearest multiple of the divisor.

1. 489 ÷ 48 = n 3. 6 245 ÷ 34 = n
500 ÷ 50 = 10 6 000 ÷ 30 =

2. 845 ÷ 39 = n 4. 964 ÷ 28 = n
800 ÷ 40 = 960 ÷ 30 =
Remember
 To estimate the quotient, change the
dividend and divisor into compatible
numbers. Compatible numbers are
numbers that can be divided easily.
To divide numbers easily, we can round
the dividends and the divisor to the
nearest ten, hundred, or thousand. Then,
we perform the division on the rounded
numbers.
Activity:
Estimate the quotient.
1. 1 640 ÷ 84 = ______
2. 3 642 ÷ 86 = ______
3. 8 971 ÷ 85 = ______
4. 5 744 ÷ 16 = ______
5. 4 202 ÷ 22 = ______
6. 751 ÷ 18 = ________
Generalization:

1. How did estimate the

quotients?
Evaluation: Estimate the quotient of the
following number problems
using compatible numbers.

1. 300 ÷ 8 = _____
2. 858 ÷ 14 = _____
3. Estimate the quotient of 978 by 18?
4. A tray can hold 13 pies. About how
many trays are needed to hold 1 605
pies?
