Background
• Films are an excellent communication medium for conveying a message to the
audience.
• Film adaptations are typically used when a literary work has been adapted into a film.
• The word "Narratology" is a term originating from both the Latin word "narratio", which refers to a
story, a saga, or a myth, and the Greek word "logos", which refers to "knowledge."

• The results of this research illustrate that narrative structures can be adapted for use as film
structures (Adepati & Samanik, 2018)
• Novelty of this study, the genre, autobiography, the type of depiction of films with
Todorov's narrative structure
01
Objectives
To classify the types of the five stages of Todorov used in
01 the film” The Fallen Angel by Genji Arato.

4
To know the implementation of the five stages of narrative

“The Fallen Angel” by Genjiro Arato

Literature Review
The term "literature" has been defined by Derek (2015) as fiction, genres, and imaginative
01 texts. Similarly to Wellek and Warren in Aras (2015), literature can be seen as a manifestation
of creative endeavour.
Movies, as a form of audio-visual storytelling, provide entertainment and deliver powerful
02 messages, creating a realistic experience that lingers with the audience (Ifianti & Rahman,
2020). This literary medium frequently portrays authentic narratives that resonate with
viewers, effectively communicating intentions, goals, and realistic messages (Asri, 2020).

Narratology is the study of narrative structure in storytelling, "Todorov's Narrative,"

03 systematically examines narrative structure, revealing levels of complexity rather than a flat
structure. Todorov's framework explains how narratives are created and presented in stories.

Reports, documentation, and novels

03 Data Collection :
Documentations
Observations
Data Analysis :
04 • Observed and recorded the main things
• Analyzing Storyline of the film
• Data was presented by Figure or photos ofthe storyline
• Draw Conclusions by interpreting of the data
04
Result
As stated by Todorov (in Eriyanto, 2013)
that all stories originate from a place of
'Equilibrium', which is a state of balance
between opposing forces that does not
lead to confrontations.
Afterwards, a "transformation of peace
that occurs in the state of peace" disrupts
this current state of affairs.
Following another set of events, there is
then a condition known as a 'New
Equilibrium'.
04
Result
The modification sequence from eriyanto (2013) is
shown by Richardson (2017) There are five stages in
the process:
(1) an equilibrium state is the state that should occur;
(2) an order disturbance occurs;
(3) a realization of the disturbance occurs;
(4) the process of repairing the damage that has been
done;
(5) the process of restoring balanced conditions is
known as the process of a new equilibrium.
04
Result
The data in Table 1 shows the number of scenes made up
of text arranged in a narrative structure based on
Todorov's work. The narrative structure used by Todorov
is divided into five stages; Equilibrium, Disruption,
Recognition, Repair of the Damage, and New
Equilibrium. Todorov's five-stage structure analysis in
this movie is classified into five categories based on
percentages: 2 (17%) Equilibrium; 3 (25%) Disruption; 4
(33%) Recognition; 2 (17%) Repair the damage; and 1
(8%) New Equilibrium.

Implementation
Disruption Recognition Repair the damage

05
Conclusion
Todorov's narratology provides a valuable framework for analyzing the structure and themes
01 of The Fallen Angel. By analyzing the narrative structure of the film, it becomes clear that
The Fallen Angel is a story about the struggle to find one's true identity and the consequences
of living a life of lies and pretenses.

This data suggests that the majority of the film's narrative is focused on the stages of
02 Disruption and Recognition, which emphasizes the importance of conflict and character
development in driving the story forward. Ultimately, the film suggests that true happiness
and fulfillment can only be achieved by embracing one's true self and living an authentic life.
05
Suggestion
01 The researcher can consider using Todorov's narratology as a framework for analyzing the
narrative structure and themes of other films.
The readers can use the knowledge gained from analyzing the narrative structure to
02 appreciate and understand other forms of literature, such as novels and short stories

The teachers can use Todorov's narratology as a teaching tool to help their students analyze
03 and interpret the narrative structure and themes of films and other literary works.

The students can use this approach for analyzing other literary works and create a new
04 creative writing project.
