WiMAX-VPON: A Framework of layer -2 VPNS for next- Generation Access Networks

Presented by; KEVIN THOMAS (viaieec019) S7- Electronics & Communication Engineering

Veda Vyasa Institute of Technology , Karadparamba

introduction
Evolution of Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (EPON)WIMAX. Integration of EPONs and WIMAX for Baseband Access Network(BAN).

Advantages of Integration
Bandwidth benefits of fiber communication and reduced cost. Non-line of sight features of wireless communication. Quality of service and improve over all network throughput.

Building of layer 2 VPNS over EPON-WIMAX Custom device controls ,QOS. Advantages of layer 2 VPNS over layer 3 VPNS. Communication media heterogeneity . Fast changing channel status . Layer 2 VPN over the EPON-WIMAX.

Efficient & light weight network management.

Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON)

History ,Was published on September 2004. Exploits TDM technique for down stream and TDMA for upstream.

Transmission speed 1 Gbit/Sec.

Video on demand & Interactive gaming. Two way video conferencing. Simple, inexpensive, scalable, capable of delivering bundled voice, low cost infrastructure.

WIMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave

Access)
Emerging technology for broad band wireless access Use for both mobile and wireless internet access

Advantages
Very high data rates
High standardization

Low cost
Coverage radius up to 50 Km and data rate of up to 70 Mbps

Comparison between WIMAX and WI FI

Both are related to wireless connectivity and internet access. WIMAX is long range system and Wi Fi is short range system for local networking. Wi Fi runs in media access controls CSMA/CA protocol whereas WIMAX runs in connection oriented MAC. WIMAX uses QoS mechanism on connection between base station and user device. Wi Fi passes data through a wireless access point to the close stations.

Virtual Private Network (VPN)

Its a shared network where private data is segmented from other traffics. Data is secured as the data flowing across the network is protected by encryption technologies. Tunneling process is used to carry data over internet. It is used for the information sharing securely from any location.

VPN-BASED QOS

Bkmin-Bandwidth reserved for Vk; Tg-Guard time;

RN-Transmission speed of the PON in Mbps;

Wk-Weight;

VPN-BASED ADMISSION CONTROL

SS-Based Admission Control

Mk- Number of ONU-BSs; kBkmin- Total allocated bandwidth; Rjk,BE- Rate reserved for BE traffic of Vkat each ONUBSj;
