Equations

By Vishalya Pather
Grade 8 Revision: Solving equations

 8x - 6 = -8 + 7x
 Points to remember:
 Sign Change
 Always move the same variables to one side of the equation.
 18x -7x = 16 + 6
 Distributive Law:
 6 (3x - 2) = 7(x + 3) + 2
Solving Equations with Fractions:
revision
Grade9 Equations with Fractions

 NB: FIND AN LCD AND MULTIPLY BOTH SIDES OF THE EQUATION BY THE
LCD
 THIS CAN ONLY BE DONE IN EQUATIONS
Restriction Variable

 With fractions- the denominator can never equal zero-undefined

 If there is a variable as the denominator- have to set a restriction for example
x=0
 The denominator can never be zero- LCD cannot equal 0
Quadratic Equations

 Covered Trinomials in Algebra- same concept

 (x-2)(x+1) = 0
X-2 = 0 or x+1=0
Normal equation- sign change to get x on its own
X= 2 or x= -1
ALWAYS REMEMBER- YOU NEED X ALONE
(5X-6)(X+2)=0
5X-6=0 or x+2=0
5x=6 – divide both sides by 5 or x=2
X= 6/5
Steps for solving quadratic equations

 RHS OR LHS MUST BE EQUAL TO 0

 FACTORISE- ALWAYS LOOK FOR HIGHEST COMMON FACTOR/identify
trinomials/ difference of squares
 SOLVE FOR X
 EXAMPLES:
 HCF. DOS. TRINOMIAL
 COMBINED
MIXED QUESTIONS
Exponential Equations
 IF the bases are the same – the exponents are equal- RULE
 STEPS TO SOLVE:
 1. make sure the exponent with the variable is alone on one side of equation
 2. use exponent laws to get the same base on both sides- REMEMBER LAWS
 3. EQUATE EXPONENTS
EXPONENTIAL EQUATIONS
