Depressurization
A depressurization is when there is a loss of pressure in the cabin, in other words the cabin
altitude increases or equalizes to the external air pressure. A depressurization is also refferred to
as decompression.
There are three types of depressurization that we can classify as:

There are three types of depressurization that we can classify as:

1) A gradual depressurization. In other words it is a slow loss of pressure.

This situation can be caused in case of a loss of one of the bleed air valves, or if the
pilots forget them (ex: King Air). Another cause would be a small leak on the
windhsield, a window or a door seal.

There are three types of depressurization that we can classify as:

2) A rapid depressurization. This case is when there is a faster rate of climb of the
cabin altitude. One of the possible causes of this is a loss of a window as in Southwest
accident or even a loss of one windshield as in the Sichuan incident in the picture
below.

of pressure that occurs to the aircraft. It can be caused in case of a structural failure, for
example, a loss of the windshield, a door or even a part of the fuselage.

pressure air and directs the air to the packs (“air conditioning system”) and pressurize the
aircraft’s cabin and also provide fresh air. The air is always renewed by releasing pressure
by the outflow valve of the aircraft. The outflow valve is also resposible to keep the cabin
altitude of the aircraft.

The average cabin altitude is always around 8,000 feet for a commercial jet aircraft.

When the cabin altitude reaches 14,000 feet the oxygen

masks drop (fall down) automatically for the passengers.
At high flight levels, a loss of
consciousness may occur within
seconds, according to the Time
of Useful Consciousness (TUC).

TUC table:

NOTE: the TUC may be reduced by 50% in case of an explosive depressurization.

Procedures in case of a depressurization
The decompression requires a reasonable list of procedures to be taken, however we will list
the most important ones below.

1) First of all, pilots must don the oxygen mask in order to keep conscious. The extremely
low external pressure can make a person faint (pass out) within seconds. (TUC)

2) Secondly it is necessary to initiate an emergency descent to flight level 100 or below in
order to provide natural oxygen supply for passengers and crew. The oxygen masks for
passengers are expected to last around 15 minutes, which is more than enough to level
off an aircraft at flight level 100.

4) And finally the pilots need to request vectors to the nearest suitable airport in order to
prevent a fuel starvation. Medical assistance may also be considered if some passengers
lost consciousness or didn’t put on the oxygen mask.
