• ONCE UPON A TIME OUR
ANCESTORS USED TO LOOK
AT THE SKY TO DETERMINE
THEIR LOCATION
• BUT TODAY IT ONLY TAKES
ONE MAGICAL TECHNOLOGY
TO GET DRIVING DIRECTIONS,
SEND PICNIC SPOT TO A LOST
FRIEND OR TO TRACK HOW
FAR YOU HAVE GONE DURING
A WORKOUT
• YOU ARE ABOUT TO FIND
A SECRET BEHIND IT!

YES!YOU GOT IT RIGHT-IT’S
GPS
• GPS stands for global positioning system
and was actually a military invention. It's
first name for Navstar, and the first satellite
was launched in 1978.
• It became fully functional in 1995 and was
first used in cars Today it is managed by
US Air Force
• The system uses signals transmitted by
orbiting satellites to pinpoint a device's
location and determine any movement over
time, when combined with other
technology, such as maps, and
incorporated into navigational systems, it
becomes a very powerful tool.
• Originally developed by the US
Department of Defense for military use,
GPS is now widely commercially available
to the public, often incorporated into
products such as stand alone or built-in
navigation devices for road vehicles and
boats, as well as apps for smartphones.
DISTANCE BETWEEM RECIEVER’S POSITION
$ GPS SATELLITE

• By measuring the amount of time taken by radio signal (the GPS) to travel from the satellite
to the receiver.

• fiadio waves travel at the speed of Light i.e. about 186,000 miles per second.

• The distance from the satellite to the receiver can be determined by the formula -

Distance = Speed *Time

GENERAL APPLICATIONS

•Location — Determining a position.

•Navigation — Getting from one location to
another.
•Tracking — Monitoring object or personal
movement.
•Mapping — Creating maps of the world.
•Timing — Making it possible to take precise
time measurements.

CONCLUSION OF
GPS
 GPS is very useful adventure.
 GPS devices are perfect for water navigation.
 Though it has some limitations, it is not considered as a big error.
 It is so because these errors are very nano errors.
 GPS is the most advanced, accurate, commercially available and multi use satellite
navigation system that has ever been existed.
 In Military Applications, it is the only system relied upon in providing data to very expensive
guided weapons.
