COMPREHENSION SKILLS
“Real reading has to do with thinking, learning,
and expanding a reader’s knowledge and
horizons. It has to do with building on past
knowledge, mastering new information, and
connecting with the minds of those you’ve never
met.”

Three levels of Comprehension

1.Literal
2.Interpretative
3.Applied
The Literal level
● The literal level focuses on
reading the passages, hearing
the words or viewing images. It
involves identifying the
important and essential
information.
● It can help in distinguishing
between the important and less
important details.
The Interpretative Level
1. At the interpretative level, the focus shifts to READING
BETWEEN THE LINES, looking at what is IMPLIED by the
material under study.
2. It requires activities that combine pieces of information in
order to make inferences about the author’s intent and
message.
Tasks:
● Drawing Inferences
● Tapping into prior knowledge
● Attaching New Learning to old information
● Making Logical heaps and educated guesses
● Reading between the lines to determine what is
meant by what is stated.

involved in reading and consciously control
them. This awareness and control of the
reading processes is called metacognition,
which means "knowing about knowing."
