Considerations in communication: ethics
and scope of practice; culture, diversity
and inclusion

© Torrens University Australia ®

Ethical principles
• The four principles are
• Autonomy,
• Beneficence,
• Nonmaleficence,
• Justice

Certain ethical principles guide medical professionals to ensure

that they always act in the best interest of their patients while
protecting their rights and welfare.
Medical practitioners and students have to understand these four
ethical principles if they want to go into health care or nursing as
their career choice.

Culturally effective communication in
healthcare - Communication

• The use of the word ‘effective’ to describe effective

cross-cultural communication reflects the reality
that unless born into or ‘growing up’ in a specific
culture, developing competence – an expectation of
proficient functioning in that culture (
Dwyer et al 2018 ) – and communication within
that culture, is a complex and challenging task.
‘Effective’ suggests the need for open
communication and receptive communication, or
effectively communicating despite differences in
cultural expectations of communication.

Cultural Safety
• The notion of cultural safety highlights
the importance of tactful and
compassionate acceptance of the
different cultures represented by the
individuals relating to the healthcare
professional. It identifies the need of the
Person/s to be involved in any healthcare
process ( Darnell & Hickson 2015 ).

• What generally creates feelings of safety

for you?
• What might create the feeling of safety in
healthcare practice?
• What might limit experiencing feelings of
safety in healthcare practice?
• How might you avoid these limitations
when practising as a healthcare professional?

What’s your Scope of Practice?

activities that an individual health care
