SPEED AND VELOCITY

explained with the help of a song…

Speed vs. Velocity
(key differences)
 Speed (v)
 Defined as : vavg = d/t
 It is a scalar
 SI unit is m/s (meters per second)

 Velocity (v )
 Defined as: vavg = d/t
 It is a vector
 SI unit is m/s [ * ] (meters per second and a direction)
Example 1 (journey takes 4 hours)

3 km

start 2 km 2 km finish
5 km 4 km

vavg = ? vavg = ?
v = d/t = 16km/4hr = km/h
v = d/t= 12km/4hr= km/h [toward duck]
Example 2 (journey takes 20 min)

5 km

vavg = ? vavg = ?
v = d/t = 5km/0.333hr = 15 km/h
v = d/t = 5km/0.333hr = 15 km/h [E]
Example 3 (journey takes ½ hour)

8m

3m

v=? v=?
v = d/t = 22m/(0.5x60x60)s = 22m/____s = ____ m/s
v=0
