Introduction
• Pervious concrete is a special type of concrete with high porosity
• It allows water from precipitation and other sources to pass directly through it
thereby reducing the runoff and allowing groundwater recharge.
• It has little or no fine aggregates.
• It consist of 15%to 35% voids allowing for quick drainage.
• It has just enough cementitious paste to coat the coarse aggregate particles while
preserving the interconnectivity of voids.
Objective

• To determine the effect of material proportions on the engineering properties of

the pervious concrete.
• The main objective is to investigate the performance characteristics of the
pervious concrete such as porosity, compressive strength etc…

Why pervious concrete
• A large amount of rain water ends up falling on impervious surfaces such as
parking lots, drive ways, sidewalks, ad streets rather than soaking into the soil.
• This creates an imbalance to the natural ecosystem and leads to a host of
problems including erosion, floods, ground water level depletion and pollution
of rivers, lakes etc..
• A simple solution to avoid these problems is to stop constructing impervious
surfaces that block natural infiltration into the soil.
• Pervious concrete also naturally filters water from rainfall or storm and can
reduce pollutant loads entering into streams, ponds and rivers.so in this way it
helps in ground water recharge.
Methodology
• Pervious concrete mainly consist of:
ordinary Portland cement.
coarse aggregates.
water(free from salts and other impurities).
• In Pervious concrete, the fine aggregates are non existent or present in very small
amount(<10% by total weight of aggregates).
• Supplementary Cementous materials(SCM) such as fly ash, blast furnace slag etc.
can also be used.
• These materials will affect the strength and setting time of the concrete.
The National Ready-Mix Concrete Association provides
typical Ranges of Materials Proportions in Pervious Concrete

• Cementitious materials • 270 to 415 kg/m3

• Aggregates • 1190 to 1480 kg/m3
• Water cement ratio(by mass)
• .28 to .40
• Fine: coarse aggregates(by mass)
• 0 to 1:1
TYPES OF PERVIOUS PAVEMENTS
• Permeable Concrete (PC)
• Permeable Asphalt (PA)
• Permeable Interlocking Concrete Pavers (PICP)
• Concrete Grid Pavers (PGP)
• Plastic Reinforcement Grids (PG) filled with Gravels.
• Plastic Reinforcement Grids (PG) filled with Grass.
DESIGN CRITERIA
• Avoid Compacting soils During Compaction
• Avoid Excessive Earthwork
• Slope
 Limit Surface Slope to 5%
 Construct bottom as flat as possible
 Use Conventional HMA for steeper slopes
Properties of pervious concrete
• The plastic pervious concrete mixture is stiff compared to traditional concrete.
• The densities are in the order of 1600 kg/m3 to 2000kg/m3.
• The void contents of the pervious concrete ranges from 15 to 25%
• Pervious concrete mixtures can develop compressive strengths in the range of
3.5 MPa to 28 MPa. Typical values are about 17 MPa.
• Flexural strength in pervious concretes generally ranges between about 1 MPa
and 3.8 MPa.
Applications
• Residential roads, alleys, and driveways
• Low-volume pavements.
• Sidewalks and pathways.
• Parking areas.
• Sub base for conventional concrete pavements.
• Well linings .
• Swimming pool decks.
Advantages

• Helps in recharging ground water.

• Eliminates need for retention ponds and other storm water management
practices.
• Prevents warm and polluted water from entering streams.
• Provides more efficient land utilization.
• It decreases the overflow of rainwater from paved areas.
Conclusion
Pervious concrete results in increased land utilization because a pervious concrete
pavement doubles as a storm water management system, there is no need to
purchase additional land for installing large retention ponds and other water-
retention and filtering systems. Its life expectancy is almost equal to that of regular
concrete. In this way pervious concrete compensates the high initial costs than
those for conventional concrete or asphalt paving thus making it by far the best
choice for pavements.
