GENDER

EQUALITY
AND
INEQUALITY
Presented by : Alexandra Rhey D. Cortez
WHAT DO WE MEAN BY
GENDER AND SEX?
Gender refers to the characteristics of women, men, girls and
boys that are socially constructed. This includes norms,
behaviours and roles associated with being a woman, man, girl
or boy, as well as relationships with each other. As a social
construct, gender varies from society to society and can change
over time.
Sex

Sex is usually categorized as female or male but there is variation in the

biological attributes that comprise sex and how those attributes are
expressed.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GENDER
EQUALITY AND GENDER INEQUALITY

Gender equality means that the rights, responsibilities and

opportunities of individuals will not depend on whether they are male
or female, handicapped or able bodied, young or elderly, white or
black, or from rural or urban settings. Women are entitled to live in
dignity, safety and security.
Gender inequality
Gender inequality is the social phenomenon in which people are not treated equally on the basis of
gender. This inequality can be caused by gender discrimination or sexism. The treatment may arise from
distinctions regarding biology, psychology, or cultural norms prevalent in the society. Some of these
distinctions are empirically grounded, while others appear to be social constructs.
