What is an
Anticipation Guide?
An anticipation guide is a comprehension
strategy used before reading to activate
students’ prior knowledge and build their
curiosity about a new topic. Before
reading, students listen to or read several
statements about key concepts presented in
the text. Often these are structured as a
series of statements with which the
students can agree or disagree.
Purpose of
Anticipation Guide
• They stimulate students’ interest in a topic and set a
purpose for reading.
• They teach students to make predictions, anticipate
the text, and verify their predictions.
• They connect new information to prior knowledge
and build curiosity about a new topic.
Why use anticipation guides?

Anticipation guides are genuinely loved by teachers

because they engage all students in the exploration of
new information by challenging them to critically
think about what they know or think they know about
a topic and how their ideas maintain or change after
learning more. In doing so, anticipation guides set a
purpose to the reading, even for those students who
initially may not be engaged by the topic.
Age appropriateness of
anticipation guides
An anticipation guide can
be a versatile instructional
tool suitable for various age
groups, depending on how
it's adapted to their
cognitive and
developmental levels.
