Scale Degrees

A method of describing tones in terms

of their position in a diatonic scale. It is
used mainly to analyse the harmony
(chords) of a composition. Each tone is
assigned both a name and a number.

are the same for both major and minor scales,
seventh one is special.

lylejireheblacassapida

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
Music

If the seventh note is a half step below the

tonic, it is called a Leading tone.

VII, LEADING TONE

Notice how the seventh note

wants to lead into the tonic.
lylejireheblacassapida

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

In natural minor, the seventh note is a whole

step below the tonic. In this case, the note is

Harmony and texture always go

together because Harmony blend tones
while texture refers to the relationship
of melodic and harmonic elements of
music. It adds richness and color for a
