Introduction
 Marine diesel engines are the backbone of maritime
transportation, playing a crucial role in powering ships that
navigate the world's oceans. These engines are designed to
provide the necessary thrust and power to propel vessels,
ranging from small boats to large ocean liners and cargo ships.
The design of a marine diesel engine requires a comprehensive
understanding of various engineering principles and a
meticulous approach to ensure performance, efficiency,
reliability, and sustainability.

7
Function of Marine diesel engine
The function of a marine diesel engine is to convert the chemical energy from
fuel (usually diesel) into mechanical energy. This mechanical energy is then
used to power the propulsion system of a marine vessel, allowing it to move
through water. Key functions of a marine diesel engine include combustion of
fuel in the cylinders to generate high-pressure gases, which in turn drive the
pistons and crankshaft to create rotational motion. This rotational motion is
then transmitted to the propeller or propulsion system, propelling the vessel
forward.
 Additionally, marine diesel engines often include systems for cooling,
lubrication, fuel injection, exhaust management, and monitoring/control to
ensure efficient and safe operation.

Over Heating of piston
• Overheating can cause cracking, melting, or erosion of the piston crown,
leading to loss of compression and potential failure of the piston.
• Overheating can cause the rings to lose their temper, stick in the grooves, or
break, leading to loss of compression, increased blow-by, and oil consumption .
