PREPOSITI

ON
(LOCATION
)
PRESENTED TO: SIR MARK JAYSON
MARINAS
TEACHING IN ENGLISH IN ELEMENTARY
GRADE INSTRUCTOR
INTRODUCTION:
The topic is all about preposition, focusing on location. Firstly, what is preposition is
all about, preposition is a word and almost always a very small, very common
word that shows direction (to in "a letter to you"), location (at in "at the door"), or
time (by in "by noon"), or that introduces an object (of in "a basket of apples").
Prepositions are typically followed by an object, which can be a noun (noon), a noun
phrase (the door), or a pronoun (you). The topic is circulating on defining the
preposition of location, and how does it work in a sentence or how do we used it
when we are constructing a sentence. The concept that I would like to introduce are
the definition of preposition of location, categories of preposition of location,
examples, how do we used it to form a sentence etc. Lastly it should be tackled for
us to know the basic definition of preposition itself, what are the uses of it, and for us
to know how to use the preposition of location when we are constructing a sentence.
Also, for us to be familiarized to the definition of prepositions.

● Prepositions of location are used to
describe the namely location of objects in
a sentence. Namely place, is the name of the
location or position of the object.
02
TYPES OF
PREPOSITION OF
LOCATION
There are three main prepositions of location, i.e., on,
in and at. Each of these prepositions has a different
meaning when used in a sentence.
‘AT’
- ‘At’ is a preposition of location that
is used to specify the point where an object
or person is at the moment. It indicates an
exact position of an object.
EXAMPLES
1. Joshua works at the bank. (The location where Joshua
works is the bank)

2. Honey and Jocelyn were eating at the restaurant. (The

location where Honey and Jocelyn eating is at the
restaurant).
‘IN’

- ‘In’ is a preposition of location

that is used to describe an enclosed
space. It tells us that the noun is
covered everywhere by something
hence inside.
EXAMPLES
1. My sister is sleeping in her room. (Here we get to know
the position of the person)

2. The manager is driving in his car. (The manager is

enclosed in the car while driving)
‘ON’

- This preposition indicates a

position that is open and on the
surface. You should use ‘on’ when the
object being described is in contact
with something on the surface.
EXAMPLES
1. The shoes are on the floor. (The floor is the surface, and
the shoe is on it)

2. The bird is on the roof of the house. (The

position of the bird is on top of the roof)
03
Another Examples of
Preposition of Location Are:
LET’S FIND OUT!!!
HERE ARE SOME:
1. Above
This preposition is used to describe a position that is at a higher level from a particular surface. A case in a
sentence:
Example:
The plane flew above the clouds. (The location of the aircraft is above the clouds).

2. Below
This preposition describes something that is at a lower level than a referenced surface.
Example:
The divers went 500 meters below the sea level.

3. Next to
Next to is used to describe a position just beside the referenced object of person. This preposition can be used
interchangeably with beside.
Example:
I was seated next to the company manager.
HERE ARE SOME:
4. In between
This preposition describes space separated by two objects.
Example:
The baby crawled in between her legs.

5. Behind
Behind is a preposition that describes a position at the back of something.
Example:
The rude boy was hiding behind the main house after beating his friend. (Here there is a barrier that is the
house then the position is at the back.

6. Under
‘Under’ is used to describe a surface just below another surface.

Example:
The charger was found under the bed. (The location here is just below the surface which in this case is the
bed.)
DIFFERENT USES OF PREPOSITIONS

PREPOSITION OF LOCATION USES

AT is a preposition of location that is
used to specify the point where an
object or person is at the moment.
IN for an enclosed space or a place
which is surrounded by boundaries
ON is often used to describe a surface.
ABOVE indicates a much higher position
than the preposition on does. It also
indicates something out of reach.
BELOW at or to a lower level or position than
someone or something.
NEXT TO used to describe a position just
beside the referenced object of
person.
IN BETWEEN in or into the space that separates
two places, people, or objects.
BEHIND Behind is the opposite of in front of.
It means at the back (part) of
something.
UNDER we use under as a preposition; it is
like below. We use under to talk
about something that is below or
lower than something else.
04 SUMMARY
- We have seen that prepositions of location are the words that
are used to describe the stationary position of an object or person at a
particular time. We have seen that the primary examples of these
prepositions are on, in, and at.

On is used to mean on the surface while in contact with something, ‘in’

is used to describe a location enclosed by something and ‘at’ is used to
describe the exact position of an object at a particular time. We have
also seen other alternative preposition of location such as besides,
below, above, and behind. We have also seen the application of each of
the preposition by giving examples.
