Nature and
Importance of
Research
Learning Competencies

At the end of the lesson, the students will

be able to:
• share research experiences and knowledge
• define research according to different authors

Research

“research”

-searching again and again

Research is a systematic
investigation or inquiry entailing
collection of data, documentation of
critical information, analysis, and
interpretation of information (Williams,
2007).
Research is the formation of new
knowledge and the employment of
previous or existing knowledge into a
new and creative way (O’Donnell, 2012).
Let’s Check
your
Knowledge!
True or False

Research involves finding possible

answer to questions.
True or False

Research is carried out to explain

situation or phenomenon.
True or False

Research is a discipline or process

for experts only.
True or False

Surveying is data gathering.

True or False

Only new knowledge can be

considered research.
True or False

Research happens only in a

laboratory.
True or False

Research improves life.

True or False

The end result of research is lies or

falsehood.
True or False

Rice cooker can be considered as

output of research.
True or False

We better understand our humanity

with research.
Importance of
RESEARCH
Leading outputs of the researches that really changed
the world and our perspectives in lives.

1. Electricity 6. Computer
2. Engines 7. Internet
3. Telephone 8. Vaccines for Viruses
4. Rubber 9. Antibiotics
5. Modern Education 10. Modern Medicine
Five Importance of
Research
Research aims for
truth (Rolfe, 2002)
We crave truth for no one has the desire to live in lies
(Rasmussen 2013). Research is about establishing truth based
on evidence or data.
Research aims for
truth (Rolfe, 2002)
Research provides us an explanation or solution to
particular problem based on truth (Kasi 2009).
Research improves
quality of human life
(Bornmann, 2013)
All of the technological advancements are brought by
different researches (Gupta, 2018).
Research saves life
(Cancer Research UK, 2013)
Ex.
Penicillin, Vaccines
Research gathers
necessary
information (Igwenagu,
2016)
Research explores
humanity (Lee, Tran, and
Lee, 2007)
Research likewise deals with the investigation of culture to
understand and to appreciate other people’s practices, and beliefs (Zion
and Kozleski 2005).
Activity: Let’s do some research!

1. What is the title of the research paper?

2. Who is/are the author/s?
3. What are the research questions used by the researcher/s?
4. Who are the respondents/participants of the study?
5. What are the findings and the conclusion/implication of the study?
Characteristics of
Research
Characteristics of Research
(Cristobal and Cristobal, 2007)

1. Research should be systematic.

The researcher needs to carry out a series

of interrelated steps in conducting the study.
1. Research should be systematic.

macrosystem microsystem
- refers to different - consists of various
chapters labeled with elements detailing the
main headings contents of each part
Characteristics of Research
(Cristobal and Cristobal, 2007)

2. Research should be objective.

The researcher needs to present

information that are purely based on truths.
Characteristics of Research
(Cristobal and Cristobal, 2007)

3. Research should be feasible.

The researcher needs to consider the

possibility and practicality of conducting the
proposed study.
Characteristics of Research
(Cristobal and Cristobal, 2007)

4. Research should be empirical

The researcher needs to employ

appropriate methods, either quantitatively or
qualitatively, to produce evidence-based
information.
Characteristics of Research
(Cristobal and Cristobal, 2007)

5. Research should be clear.

The researcher needs to use

comprehensible language to present information
and convey explanation throughout the research
process.
Activity: What Can I Do?
Examine the following research scenarios and
identify what characteristic of research is disregarded.
Then, suggest how can the researcher improve his/her
work. Write your answers on a one whole sheet of paper.
The researcher lacks explanation on the
identified variables being studied.
Characteristic disregarded:
