St Nicholas Day on
December 6th
• St Nicholas is supposed
to be the predecessor
of Santa Claus as his
name is a corruption of
the Germanic version

personality, a bishop of
the 4th century AD
• He was born in Minor
Asia and consecrated
his life for Christianity,
as he became the
bishop of Myra.
• He died in the year 342

• St. Nicholas is the
protector of sailors and
he is considered the
patron saint of the
Greek Navy
• His day is marked by
festivities aboard all
ships and boats, at sea
and in port

• Schools are closed if
you live in an area
where St Nicholas is the
patron saint
• People attend the
special service of church
and they follow the
procession of his image

• St Nicholas day is
supposed to be the
starting point of the
cold winter months
• According to the folk
tradition, on December
6 is the official start of
the winter and families
should carpet their
homes
