MOLE FRACTION
Mole Fraction
• It is the ratio of the number of moles
of that substance to the total number
of moles in the solution.
• The symbol for the mole fraction is
the lower-case Greek letter chi, χ.
Sample Problem 1. A vessel
contains 0.4 moles H2, 2.0
moles N2 and 1.7 moles F2?
What is the mole fraction of
each substance?
Sample Problem 2. A 40.0 g
methanol sample (CH4O) is
mixed with 60.0g ethanol
sample (C2H6O). What is the
mole fraction of the solute
and solvent?
Sample Problem 3. What is
the mole fraction of the solute
in a 40% by mass ethanol
(C2H6O) solution in water
(H2O)?
Determine the mole fraction of the solute in the
following solutions.

1) 1.00 mol CH2O (methanal) and 1.00 mol H2O

2) 100.0g ethanol (C2H6O) in 230.0g water (H2O)

3) 36% HCl (Hydrochloric Acid) solution by mass
