CLIMATE CHANGE:

Prioritizing Safety and Health in a changing

Climate: Celebrating world Safety Day
Introduction to Climate
Climate change refers to long-term
Change
shifts in temperatures and weather
patterns. Such shifts can be
natural, due to changes in the
sun's activity or large volcanic
eruptions.
But since the 1800s,
human activities have been the mai
n driver of climate change
, primarily due to the burning of
fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas.

As climate change intensifies,

workers around the globe find
themselves at an increased risk of
exposure to hazards such
as excessive heat, ultraviolet
radiation, extreme weather
2 events, air pollution, vector-borne DW-HSE-TM026
Causes of Climate Change
 Natural Causes: Natural factors contributing to climate change, such
as volcanic eruptions, solar radiation variations, and orbital changes
affecting Earth's tilt and orbit.

 Human Activities: Human-induced factors driving climate change,

including greenhouse gas emissions from burning fossil fuels,
deforestation, industrial processes, and agricultural practices.

3
Human-Induced Greenhouse
Gas Emissions
Greenhouse Gases: Such as carbon
dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and
nitrous oxide (N2O), in trapping heat in
the Earth's atmosphere.

Fossil Fuel Combustion: Combustion of

fossil fuels for energy production,
transportation, and industrial processes
as the primary source of CO2
emissions.

Deforestation:
Deforestation and land-
use changes as major contributors to
CO2 emissions and loss of carbon
sinks.

Global Impact of Climate
Change
 Rising Temperatures: Global
temperature rise and its impact weather
patterns and shifts in ecosystems.

 Extreme Weather Events: Increase in

frequency and intensity of extreme
weather events, including heatwaves,
hurricanes, floods, and droughts.

 Sea Level Rise: Rise in sea levels

caused by thermal expansion of
seawater and melting glaciers, leading
to coastal erosion, flooding, and loss of
habitat.

Social and Economic
Impacts
 Food Security: Implications of climate
change on agriculture, food production,
and food security, leading to crop failures,
reduced yields, and increased food prices.

 Human Health: Health risks associated

with climate change, including heat-related
illnesses, air pollution, waterborne
diseases, and vector-borne diseases.

 Economic Disruptions: Economic costs of

climate change, including damage to
infrastructure, loss of livelihoods, and
increased healthcare expenses
