• Halloween is a celebration observed in many countries
on 31 October, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows' Day. It is at the beginning of the observance of Allhallowtide, the time in the liturgical year dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints (hallows), martyrs, and all the faithful departed.
• Halloween costumes are traditionally based on
frightening supernatural or folkloric beings. However, by the 1930s, costumes based on characters from mass media such as film, literature, and radio were popular. Halloween costumes have tended to be worn mainly by young people but since the mid-20th century, they have been increasingly worn by adults as well. It is suggested that trick-or-treating evolved from a tradition whereby people impersonated the spirits, or the souls of the dead, and received offerings on their behalf. S. V.
