THE TIGER (PHANTERA
TIGRIS)
ORIGIN AND EVOLUTION:
ORIGIN:
-Tigers appeared in Asia about 2
million years ago during the
Pleistocene. They are part of the
genus Panthera, along with lions,
leopards and jaguars.
EVOLUTION:
They diversified into several
subspecies due to adaptation to
different habitats in Asia, including
the Bengal, Siberian, Sumatra,
Indochinese and Malayan tigers.
Tigers dispersed from Southeast Asia
to the north and west.
CHARACTERISTICS:
- Males can weigh between 90 and
300kg and measure up to 3.3 meters
in length including the tail.
- Females can weigh between 65 and
167kg and measure up to 2.75 meters.
-The color of the coat is orange with
black stripes and the stripes are
unique to each individual, like
fingerprints.
_they live and marry alone, except the
females with their offspring.
- Each individual has an extensive
territory that it defends from other
tigers.
Habitat
Tigers occupy a wide variety of
habitats. The most common ones are
tropical forests, savannas, grasslands,
evergreen forests, coniferous forests,
mangrove areas, and rocky terrains.
Any tiger habitat must meet a series of
requirements that can vary among each
subspecies. These are, namely:
-Proximity to water. They need it to
hydrate and occasionally stalk prey
while their body is submerged. Tigers
are good swimmers thanks to their
partially webbed toes and sometimes
drag their victims into the water.
-Abundance of prey.
-Dense cover. This is very important
because they lurk hidden among tall
grass at their prey until they decide to
attack. Their stripes allow them to
camouflage among the vegetation.
