Lesson objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students must have:
1.defined what a PVC conduit is;
2.identified the different types of PVC conduit bends;
3.explained the procedure of offset bending of PVC conduit;
4.demonstrated the procedures in offset bending of PVC
conduit while observing safety; and
5.explained the importance of correct offset bending of PVC
conduit.
What is a PVC pipe?

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) conduit is made from thermos plastic that is used to
protect and route electrical wiring in a building or structure. It is the most
popular type of non-metallic conduit and has several advantages:
• Versatile and easy to install
• Typically less expensive than other options
• Lightweight
• Available in a variety of wall thicknesses
• Works well in concrete and underground
 Despite its many advantages in other applications, PVC conduit isn't
recommended for use in areas with direct sunlight exposure. Sunlight can
break down the material over time.
Different types of PVC pipe bends

1. Offset bend - This bend is made up of two equal-degree

bends that are bent in opposite directions. This bend can be
used when the run of the raceway is changing elevations.
2. Stub up bend. 90 degrees- A stub-up bend is a 90° bend used to bring a
raceway from under the floor up to a receptacle box or into a panel or wireway.
The stub bend is made by bending a piece of conduit into an L shape or 90° bend
by placing the tube’s free end (short end) to a predetermined length as indicated
in the diagram below.
3. 3 Point Saddle - Three-point saddle bend (round saddle bend) is used when the conduit
runs across circular objects like pipes. The 3-point saddle is used to jump over small
obstructions 6” or less, such as an installed raceway that runs perpendicular to the raceway
you are installing. This bend is made by bending the middle bend twice the degree of the
two-side bends.
4. 4-Point Saddle - The 4-point saddle (square saddle bend) is made up of two
equal-sized offset bends, bent in opposite directions. This bend is used to jump
over larger blockages than a 3-point saddle can handle. A square saddle is just a
combination of two offset bends.
5. Back-to-back bend - A back-to-back bend is any bend that needs a 90
degree bend located a predetermined distance away. This is probably the
most common type of bend. A mark is
made on the raceway at the exact distance that is needed for the 90-degree
bend.
BEND DEFECTS

Burned
Kinks or Groove
The diameter of the conduit is greatly reduced due to
improper bending procedure
Importance of proper PVC conduit
bending

Understanding the right conduit and bending tool for the job is
crucial in electrical installations. It ensures the safety, durability,
and efficiency of the electrical system. However, bending conduit
especially RMC, IMC, EMT, and PV requires skill and
knowledge to do correctly. Improper bending can damage both
the conduit and the wiring inside and may lead to safety hazards.
EVALUATION
1. Define in your own words what a PVC conduit is.
2. Give at least 3 advantages of using PVC conduit.
3. What is the importance of proper PVC pipe bending?
Procedures in performing offset bends in PVC
conduits
1. Prepare and wear your PPE
Gloves, safety shoes, cover-all, face mask
2. Prepare the tools and materials that you need
heat gun, PVC pipe cutter, marker(pencil), pull-push rule, sand,
masking tape damp cloth
3. Measure the length of the PVC to be bent.
4. Measure 5 inches from the end of the conduit and divide it into 2 parts. (2.5 inches per part)
5. Pour sand to the PVC conduit.
6. Heat the PVC conduit on the part for the offset. Make sure that the heat is distributed evenly.
Then perform the offset bend.
7. Wipe the PVC conduit with a damp cloth
8. Remove the sand and install
NAME THE TYPES OF THE DIFFERENT PVC
CONDUIT BENDS
Practical performance – PVC pipe offset bending

Directions: Install the PVC pipe conduit of the utility

box of switch S3WB to the junction box of lamp A in
your wiring boards following the proper procedure.
After finishing your work, write in a narrative form in
not less than 4 sentences the processes that you have
done in performing the offset bending including the
problems that have occurred during your work.
