Dissecting the RI Toolkit

You will go through the slides to get a insight into the features and content of the
Remedial Instruction toolkit and return to the classwork page to complete a
lesson plan with the integration of the RI Toolkit.
Introducing the Remedial Instruction Programme Toolkit

The Toolkit has 6 main sections

(which we will explore in depth
later)

• Thinking about Skills (in this

unit, the skill is reading)
• Thinking about Phonics
• Thinking about Vocabulary
• Thinking about Grammar
• Thinking about Out of Class
• Printable Resources

2
Remedial Instruction Programme Toolkit: Unit Overview
• The toolkit is aligned to the CEFR
• There are 10 units, and each unit has a
different skills focus (this one is Reading).
Other skills are Listening, Writing, and
Speaking.
• The DSKP descriptors for Pre-A1 are
aligned to Year 1 curriculum documents
(remember that this is a Remedial
Instruction Programme)
• The vocab and phonics are also aligned to
the Year 1 curriculum – note that unlike
the Year 1 curriculum, this toolkit
recognizes that some students need
support with Phonics, and so in each unit,
there will be a phonics focus to support
the mechanics of reading for RI students
• Each unit focuses on remedial grammar,
too. Where possible, the grammar is
aligned to the Year 4 curriculum. For
example, the Year 4 grammar focus for
Unit 7 is possessive object pronouns (The
car is his). However, before remedial
students can understand this, they need to
know subject pronouns (from the Year 1
curriculum), which is what their focus will
be on. 3
Remedial Instruction Programme Toolkit:
Scheme of Work and Content Mapping
• The SoW # column shows PS which
SoW number that row refers to
• It is linked to the Year 4 Get Smart
Student book so that they can easily
orient themselves with their planning
• The third column shows the specific
suggested focus for SoW
numbers / Get Smart student book
page numbers. Emphasise that
these are suggestions only. They
can use their own judgement
because they will know their
students better than anyone.
• The fourth column shows what
printable resources have been
designed for this SoW number.
• The Printable Resource # column
shows where they can find the
relevant pintable resource.
• The Remedial Instruction strategy
shows the suggested RI strategy.

• The toolkit is designed for teachers to support Remedial Students in every lesson.
• The philosophy is little and often; teachers should aim to find 15-minute slots in each lesson for Remedial
activities.
• The teacher’s main role in implementing the Toolkit is to find opportunities within the lesson for Remedial
8
Students to do the level-appropriate Toolkit activities.
