HAND HYGIENE
Hands are the most common vehicle for transmission of organisms.
Effective Hand Hygiene has been recognized as the single most important way to
prevent the health care associated infection.
Definition: Performing hand washing using Antiseptic hand washing, alcohol
based hand rub, surgical hand hygiene.
Indications for Hand Hygiene:
When hands are visibly dirty, soiled or contaminated, wash hands with plain
water and using antiseptic soaps.
If hands are not visibly dirty, use alcohol based hand rubs to decontaminate
hand
5 Moments of Hand Washing

BEFORE:
• Touching a patient
• Cleaning or aseptic procedure
AFTER:
• Touching a patient
• Touching patients surroundings
• Exposure of blood or body fluids.
Key Rules
Must perform hand hygiene at POINT OF CARE.
Must use appropriate techniques and duration in order to be effective i.e.,
duration of entire procedure should be 20-30 seconds.
Hand rubs are normally recommended over hand wash
Defined times during care delivery when it is essential to perform hand
hygiene.
