WHY IS ACADEMIC COMMUNICATION
IMPORTANT?

The aim of academic communication is to develop

ideas, create or contribute to a debate within the
field and, ultimately, to advance knowledge within
your academic discipline.
WHAT ARE TYPES OF ACADEMIC
COMMUNICATION?

The four main types of academic writing

are descriptive, analytical, persuasive and
critical. Each of these types of writing has
specific language features and purposes. In
many academic texts you will need to use
more than one type.
Descriptive

The simplest type of academic writing is

descriptive. Its purpose is to provide facts or
information. An example would be a
summary of an article or a report of the
results of an experiment.
Analytical writing style is often called for at
university level. It involves reviewing what you've
read in light of other evidence. Analytical writing
shows the thought processes you went through to
arrive at a given conclusion and discusses the
implications of this.
Persuasive writing has all the features
of analytical writing (that is, information plus re-
organising the information), with the addition of your
own point of view. Most essays are persuasive, and
there is a persuasive element in at least the discussion
and conclusion of a research article
Academic writing requires criticality; it's not
enough to just describe or summarise evidence, you also
need to analyse and evaluate information and use it to
build your own arguments. This is where you show your
own thoughts based on the evidence available, so critical
writing is really important for higher grades
