Introduction

Embankment dams are the structures which is constructed

of naturally available material for purposes
 Irrigation and Water supply
 Flood management,
 Electricity generation,
 Recreational activities

3
Introduction…
The stability of the upstream and downstream (Zewdu, 2020)
Material (rock fill and soil fill ) (Antonia, 2013), (Stephens, 2010)
Seepage Failures and Structural Failures (Punmia & Lal, 1992)
Flood Loading (Ndehedehe et al., 2016)
Considerations for designing earth fill dams (Adamo et al., 2020)

4
Introduction…
Embankment Dam Failure (Punmia & Lal,1992)
Hydraulic Failures/To be overtopped or erosion (More than 40%)
Seepage Failures (almost 30%) due to pure construction(work
man),compaction ,material used
Structural Failures caused by shear failure,
Which slides down slopes (between 25% and 30%)

5
Introduction…
Therefor,
Timely analysis, evolution and examination of seepage and slope
stability is the key for the safety of embankment dam; since the
failure of disastrous effects on people, property which found
around the vicinity of the structure.

6
Statement of the problem

Generally, statement of the problem:

Currently Kata Dibe dam challenged by high Seepage through
the abutment and foundation
This seepage influencing the slope directly and indirectly; in
addition slope stability of the structure under risky because of
from the pool of water behind the structure

7
Scope of the study
To assess the Kata Dibe earthen dam's seepage and slope
stability using software and other practically
PLAXIS-2D, ARC GIS, AutoCAD and Geo Studio
Dam site visiting and visual inspection about the current
condition of the dam
Interviewing the beneficiaries and operator about the past
condition of the dam
Manuals guidelines, standards for the design and analysis of
embankment dam

8
Objective of the Study

General objective
 Analyze seepage and slope stability using Plaxis-2D
Specific objective
 To assess the dam's existing condition (current status)
 To find out the dam's level of damage and stability
 To calculate the amount of seepage through the abutment and
dam's main body
 To Suggest the best suitable stability measures

9

Water table levels, hydraulic conductivity measurements
Topographic information
Assess the terrain, drainage patterns and potential areas of slope instability

13
Materials and data collection…
Data Collection…

Design and Construction Documentation

Design drawings, construction specifications, as-built plans and
understand its geometry, foundation details, and materials used in
construction
Field supervision
Dam performance, including seepage rates, settlement measurements,
deformation monitoring and slope instability

14
Methods
Preliminary Assessment:
Review of literature, reports ,design, construction, and historical
performance

Data Collection and Site Characterization:

Geotechnical data, geological maps, topographic surveys, hydrogeological
information, soil sampling, groundwater monitoring and geophysical surveys.
Seepage Analysis:
Utilize software model groundwater flow through the dam foundation,
abutments, and surrounding geological formations.

15
Methods…
Risk Assessment and Mitigation:
Evaluate seepage and slope instability on dam safety, downstream areas,
and environmental impact.
Propose mitigation measures, such as grouting, drainage systems, or slope
reinforcement
Validation and Calibration:
seepage measurements and case studies of similar dam projects.
Reporting and Presentation:
procedures, findings, and conclusions by using charts, graphs, and maps,
