Ferroelectric Random Access Memory

(FeRAM)

By Suchithra HK
INTRODUCTION
 Ferroelectric RAM is random access memory using a Ferro-electric capacitor
and its hysteresis to achieve non-volatility.
 Also popular as FRAM , FeRAM or F-RAM
 FRAM is similar to DRAM in construction, and FLASH memory in
functionality.

STRUCTURE OF FRAM

• Structure of FRAM is similar to

DRAM where the dielectric layer is
replaced by a Ferro-electric layer
• It consists of a word line,bit
line,Transistors and a Ferro-electric
capacitor to perform read/write/store
operation
FERRO-ELECTRIC CAPACITOR
 The two states associated with a Ferro-electric material can be used in a capacitor to
create two states for a memory cell.
 By applying the relevant field, the capacitor can be polarized either up or down.

 To use this variable capacitor in a memory cell, an active component(FET) is used

BASIC WORKING
 A single memory cell consists of a word line and a bit line .
READ OPERATION

 Two cases that need to be considered

 Capacitor state switches
 No switching of capacitor state
WRITE OPERATION

 FRAM’s write operation uses the same principles employed in read

operation.
 The control circuitry applies field in the direction desired by the write
operation.
 Once in place, the data will remain intact even when the power supply is
turned off.
FRAM’S COMPARED TO OTHER
MEMORIES
ADVANTAGES
 FRAM allows systems to retain information even when
power is lost , without resorting to batteries , EEPROM , or
FLASH.
 Access times are the same as for standard SRAM, so there
is for EEPROM and FLASH.
 Low power consumption, low voltage operation and high
write endurance make it superior than other non-volatile
memories like EEPROM and FLASH.
 It is less expensive than magnetic memories.
DRAWBACKS

 Low density compared to SRAM and DRAM ,

resulting in more real estate.
 Higher cost , which limits its manufacturing
capabilities.
Current Applications

 Automotive
 Shift-by-Wire/Navigation/Anti-Pinch Control
 Computing
 Solid State Drive/LAN Bypass/Network Router
 Metering
 Advanced Metering/Gaming/POS
Systems
 Industrial
 Motion Control/Process
Controls
 RFID/Wireless Memory
 Wireless Datalogging/Gamma
Radiation
