TRAPEZOID

BY: ANTHONY SALIBA , ELLA NAJJAR , KEVIN CHEHWAN , MARIE ANGE BAAKLINI
1) DEFINITION OF A TRAPEZOID

A trapezoid is a quadrilateral having exactly two parallel sides .

•The distance between the bases is the height of the trapezoid.

PROPERTIES OF A TRAPEZOID
• A trapezoid is a quadrilateral with one pair of parallel sides and one pair of non-parallel sides.
• It is not considered a parallelogram.
• The base of a trapezoid is created by two parallel sides.
• The non-parallel sides: Legs
• The four corners: vertices
2) SPECIAL TRAPEZOIDS
Two types:

. Right trapezoid: .Isosceles trapezoid:

BÂD=AC=90 the nonparallel sides are equal

[AD] is the height of the trapezoid DA=CB
3) PROPERTIES OF AN ISOSCELES TRAPEZOID

1-The angles adjacent to the big base are equal.

2-The angles adjacent to the small base are equal.
3- The diagonals are equal.
4- The bases have the same perpendicular bisector; it is also the axis of symmetry of the
trapezoid.
4) HOW TO PROVE THAT A TRAPEZOID IS
ISOSCELES ?
1) The angles adjacent to one of the bases are equal
2) The 2 nonparallel sides are equal
3) The diagonals are equal
4) The bases have the same perpendicular bisector

• DÂB=AC or AC=DB
• AD=BC
• BD=AC
5) THE MIDSEGMENT THEOREM

THEOREM:
The segment joining the midpoints of 2 sides in a triangle is parallel to the third side and its
length is half the length of the third side.

(DE) // (BC) and DE=BC

6) PROPERTIES

Property 1(converse of the midsegment theorem) :

In a triangle, the line drawn from the midpoint of a side parallel to another, passes through the midpoint of
the third side.

In triangle ABC, I is the midpoint of [AB],

(Ix) is parallel to (BC).
Therefore , (Ix) passes through the midpoint J of
[AC].
PROPERTIES

PROPERTY 2 ( Midsegment theorem in a trapezoid):

Given: ABCD is a trapezoid with : 1) Then I,J,K,L are collinear. (IJ) ∕∕ (AB) ∕∕ (DC).
• I is the midpoint of [AD] ([IJ] is called the midsegment of the trapezoid).
• J is the midpoint of [BC] 2) IJ=CD+AB
• K is the midpoint of [AC] 2
• L is the midpoint of [BD] 3)LK=CD-AB
