TRANSFORMATION OF SENTENCES

Transformation of sentences means to change the form of a sentence without


changing its meaning. A simple sentence can be changed into a complex or a
compound sentence and vice versa. Similarly, an interchange of affirmative,
negative, and interrogative sentences can be done; without changing their
meaning.
TRANSFORM THE FOLLOWING INTO PASSIVE
VOICE
1. Had Ronnie not read this letter?
2. Light the lamp.
3. Which book do you read these days?
4. Whom did you meet yesterday?
5. Shylla was writing a letter.
6. The drowing girl needs help.
7. She has already completed her task.
8. Wasn’t Tina singing a song?
9. Mina will have received the letter before you reach there.
10.Please post this letter.
TRANSFORM THE SENTENCES FROM PASSIVE
TO ACTIVE
1. A van was being driven by me.
2. Will a house be bought by her?
3. Let all the windows be opened.
4. By whom are you taught Physics?
5. A story was told to her by me.
6. Indiscipline should not be encouraged.
7. She was sent an invitation by them.
8. Has this sum not been solved by you?
9. The parcel has been received by her.
10.You are advised to work hard.
DO AS DIRECTED
1. She was so tired that she could not keep her eyes open. (Use too)
2. He is so tall that he does not need a ladder to change the light bulb. (Rewrite using ‘enough’)
3. The owner of the house has gone abroad. (Rewrite as a complex sentence)
4. The soldiers who were victorious were honoured by the president. (Rewrite as a simple
sentence)
5. Though he was powerful, he was lonely. (Rewrite as a compound sentence)
6. The teacher insists that the students write neatly. Rewrite using ‘writing’.
7. Don’t take bath in the pool as it needs to be cleaned. Rewrite using ‘bathe’.
8. The riverbed is slimy; don’t step in. Rewrite using ‘slime’.
9. Speak loudly. (Rewrite using ‘could’)
10. Probably we will have to write the test tomorrow. (Rewrite using ‘may’)
