GOOD MORNING

-Ma’am Quin
OBJECTIVES
• Define Hypothesis Testing
• Understand the idea about
hypothesis testing
• Formulate statistical
Hypothesis
WHAT IS THE MOST
POPULAR MODE OF
TRANSPORTATION USED
BY THE STUDENTS?
SCENARIO
Suppose the principal wants to know
how the students go to school so
that the matter will be brought to the
attention of the local parent-teacher
association for action and to the
community officials for policy
formulation. How will you decide?
What evidence does the principal
need in order to be credible?
COLLECT
DATA
FROM THE
STUDENTS
QUESTIONS:

• How many students participated in

the survey? How do you know?
• Based on the tabulated information,
what can you conclude, if any, is any
about the most popular mode of
transportation in going to school for
all students?
HYPOTHESIS
TESTING
Prepared by:
Ms. Queenny P. Ibarrientos
HYPOTHESIS
- An assumption or
concession made for
the sake of
argument.
HYPOTHESIS TESTING
- Hypothesis testing is a decision-
making process for evaluating
claims about a population based
on the characteristics of a sample
purportedly coming from that
population. The decision is
whether the characteristic is
acceptable or not.
Null hypothesis
- denoted by H0 is a statement
that there is no difference
between a parameter and a
specific value or that there is no
difference between two
parameters.
Alternative hypothesis
- denoted by H1, is a
statement that there is a
difference between a
parameter and a specific value,
or that there is a difference
between two parameters.
2 TYPES OF ALTERNATIVE HYPOTHESIS

DIRECTIONAL
- also called as one-tailed
test utilizes the > or <
symbol
Right-tailed(>) terms
“greater”, “more than”,
“improves”, “higher”, etc.
Left-tailed(<) terms
“less than”, “decrease”,
“lower”, “below”, etc.
2 TYPES OF ALTERNATIVE HYPOTHESIS

NON- DIRECTIONAL

- Also called as
two-tailed utilizes ǂ
symbol.
DIRECTIONAL OR NON-
DIRECTIONAL?
“A mother wants to
prove that reading
books to children
improves their thinking
processes”
DIRECTIONAL
Because of the word
“IMPROVES”
DIRECTIONAL OR NON-
DIRECTIONAL?
“A store keeper
thinks that time of
day influences sales
of ice cream”
NON-
DIRECTIONAL
Formulate the null and alternative hypothesis in symbol.

EXAMPLE:
“The average TV viewing
time of all five-year old
children is 4 hours”
Null hypothesis:

H0: μ= 4 hours
“The sample comes from
a population mean whose
mean is 4 hours.”
Alternative hypothesis:
(Non-directional)

H1: μǂ4 hours

“The sample does not come
from a population whose mean
is 4 hours.”
“A farmer believes that
using organic fertilizers on
his plants will yield
greater income. His
average income from the
past was ₱200, 000.00”
H0: μ= ₱200, 000.00
“The sample does come from a
population whose mean is ₱200,000.”

H1: μ> ₱200, 000.00

“The sample is greater than a
population whose mean is ₱200,000.”
QUIZ
(1/4 Sheet of paper)
1. An intelligent guess about the
characteristic of a population is
called:
a. mean
b. proportion
c. hypothesis
d. test statistic
2. A Junior High School librarian
claims that 70 storybooks on the
average are borrowed daily.

Directional or Non-Directional?
3. Jane claims that the
performance of the students
watching K-dramas is decreasing.
Their mean performance this year
is 87.

Directional or Non-Directional?
4. The average age of all youth in
a remote area is 19 years.

Write the null hypothesis in symbol.

6. A Math Teacher claims that the
performance of Grade 11 students
improves during the monthly Math Quiz.
The average performance is 90.

Write the alternative hypothesis in

symbol.
7. A factory worker believes that their
products yielded higher income. Her
mean income was ₱150, 000 last year.

Write the null hypothesis in symbol.

bread is fortified with
vitamin B
