Fuel & Oil

WHY?
 Avoid prosecution: Your employer or you as an individual can be
prosecuted for causing water pollution.
 Cost: The costs of clean up far exceed those to put control measures in
place.
 Damage to wildlife: Oil pollution can have a devastating effect on the
water environment, it spreads over the surface in a thin layer that
stops oxygen getting to the plants and animals that live in the water.

DO
 Store oils away from drains or watercourses
 Return oil and fuels to storage areas after use
 Locate oil stores away from areas of high vehicular movement to
prevent accidental damage
 Bund individual 200 liter drums to 25%
 Supervise all fuel deliveries
 Lock oil stores when not in use
 Use drip trays during refueling from mobile plant.
 Keep a spill kit near to fuel and oil storage areas and refueling

ENVIRONMENTAL CALENDAR-FEB areas.

 Keep all hoses and pipe work within bunded area after use
 Report any irregularities or incidents

WHAT DON’T
A large number of oil related water pollution incidents occur each year. × Refuel or store oil within 10m of watercourses or surface water
Discharging fuel or oil or water containing fuel or oil into drains or watercourses is illegal. Oil and gas drains
× Leave bunds and drip trays to overflow
operations could release many tons of harmful pollutants into the air and discharge dangerous chemicals into × Leave refueling hoses outside of bunds after use
the water, thereby degrading the clean air and water that polar bears, whales, walrus—and humans—depend × Use high pressure delivery systems when filling small containers
× Hose down spills
on for survival. Many pollution incidents are from unbonded tanks and can easily be avoided by following × Ignore spillages
